Default Wheel bearing replacement vs. hub assembly swap

My driver rear wheel is making noise and sure enough i jacked the car up and with hands at "12" and "6" the wheel shook back and forth. Would i be better off just having the bearing replaced or ordering a used hub/bearing assembly from ebay and having that installed? I was going to do just the bearing but i heard that something else can wear in conjunction with the bearing. All info would be appreciated

I just recently had a wheel bearing issue also. After removing the bearing we noticed my hub was damaged as well. Im not sure if it was the time I rode on the bad bearing(2-3 wks) that caused the hub damage or what but I indeed had to replace both.

Sometimes, but not always, a bad bearing will damage the hub. I don't think you can tell until you take it all apart. As far as a used bearing/hub assembly - no such thing. Removing a bearing destroys it. You can certainly get a used hub on its own, though.

I would replace the hub but I would not buy a used ebay one.

I believe he is talking about buying a complete rear knuckle assembly. That's what I did, price was about the same as buying a hub/bearing but there is less labor involved since you don't have to press anything in/out.

CHEESEFRIES333, I personally wouldn't trust that unless I talked to the seller first. While the title says "bearing," the description ONLY mentions "hub," the picture is not an S2000 part, and removing a hub from a knuckle WILL destroy the bearing. You should confirm what exactly the seller is offering, IMO.

1nate7's link, assuming the part is in good working order, would be an excellent way to go. $100 for the assembly compares to $155 for the knuckle, $98.99 for the hub, and $58.26 for the bearing if you go with new parts from Majestic. (Keep in mind that this auction is for a 2002 unit, and IIRC AP1 and AP2 knuckles are different.) Of course, if ALL you need is the bearing, and have a shop that will do the press work for you for a reasonable fee, getting just a new bearing will save you money. And then again, that won't help you if it turns out you need a new hub as well.

I had both the bearing and hub replaced on my driver's side rear (OEM honda parts). No noise and I'm happy.

I bought the entire rear knuckle from a local guy for 100 bucks off a late model ap2 and that solved my problem. I did not need any special tools or have to pay anyone to press anything in.
