Default oil choice revisited and DIY vs. dealer for warranty

Most people seem to like Mobil 1. I have alway had good results from them.. my question is how does honda feel about the owner changing the oil instead of the dealer? what sort of documentation is needed to protect the warranty? I hate paying someone to do a job that I can do as well and for much less.

Of course the dealers don't like it when you do your own oil changes and they'll do all sorts of "arm twisting" or dumbass warranty threats to scare you into getting your service done by them. They're losing revenue, you know.
Keep all receipts for your fluids, filters, etc. and keep a log of when you do "everything" along with dates and mileages. I have a clipboard that I write everything I do to the car. They'd have to prove with "carbon dating" that I wrote in my entries just before coming in for a warranty claim.

Would not hurt to have a buddy sign and date the receipts so you've got a witness.

I keep a service scrapbook.

I keep track of every time I check the oil dipstick (date, mileage) and so on.

When I change the oil, I tape the barcode from the honda oil filter wrapper in my book, along with the old crush washer and the API starbursts from the bottles of oil. I list the torque I applied the filter and bolt to.

I plan to be as careful about documenting other stuff as I go along.

If they try to deny me service, I'll drop the scrap book on 'em.

I change my own oil. You should see how some of the Honda techs just over torque the oil bolts and filter.

I have an advanced spreadsheet that tracks pretty much everything from MPG, oil consumption and topping off, and any fluid changes. Of course I keep all the receipts to back up my data. I hope that I never have to use this data to argue with the dealer.
