Best Year To Own?
My 2001 with the original Plastic back window . I did not like the idea of a plastic back window but mine is still incredibly clear . Any year is a good one as long as the car is well maintained . Mine looks new .

So I've loved the s2000 for quite a few years, and I frequent this forum occasionally even though I am not an s2000 owner. I have become anxious for a new car purchase lately and am thinking that this is the car that I will most likely purchase.
I would like to spend as little as possible on the purchase of this car but don't want to lose any beneficial features or performance aspects because I was too cheap. With that aspect, I was wondering what some safe productions year are that would be ok to purchase. I am thinking hardtop, rims, and possible a new front so AP1/AP2 appearance doesn't make a difference to me. I am just more curious if there were significant changes made each model year.
I am aiming to spend in $20,000 range (cheaper if poss). Thanks in advance.

If you want a more civilized car that is easier to drive without being any slower, and if you can find an MY04 that you can afford, that's the way to go. If, on the other hand, you want a car that has higher specific output, a higher rev limit, a lighter flywheel, less forgiving handling, and less civilized feeling, then you'll probably like the MY02-03 cars best. Drive both an MY04 and an MY02-03 car to help you decide. They're both wonderful cars, but they're quite a bit different.
The MOST important thing is the condition of the car you buy. If you can find a single owner car that has been well cared for and not abused and isn't worn out, at a price you can afford, jump on it.
Don't overspeend, and don't forget that insurance on this car is going to be expensive.
Don't runsh into buying a car. Wait until you can find exactly the car you want, in excellent condition. It may take a while to find just the right car, but it will be well worth the wait.
