Brand New S2000 owner with a few questions...
Hey guys- just bought an 01 silverstone s2000 with 44,000 miles on it. Just got out of a 20th a.e. gti-long story short bought car yesterday from used car lot- not certified honda though. Carfax came up good- just have a few questions. I used to have an 02 rsx type s so i know a little about vtec motors- like i said the car has around 44,000 miles on it. Is it normal for a little lifter tap? Nothin knockin but a little- of course gets faster as i rev the car up. Also- i am getting the diff oil, trans fluid, new plugs and the valves adjusted at the honda dealer tues. Is this the right course of action with a used 2000? Annything else somebody can reccomend? I am married plus military so dont have allot of money to fix the thing if it blows up- so any (and I mean ANY) help would be much appreciated. Thanks! p.s.- is it normailly pretty slow below 5500? Its just the vtech fells allot smoother then my old type S. Thx again
Mine taps. I thought something was wrong, but, there have been many posts here regarding the normal sound that our engines make. And most seem to have a tap. I had an 03 Civic Si prior to this car and the ivtec K20b (?) also tapped.
You mentioned that you cash could be tight. If you are in to doing your own maintenance, this car is VERY easy to maintain. I have found xviper's articles on changing all fluids to be great. I have never done anything other than oil on my previous cars. I do everything myself now on my S2000. Saves me a lot of $$$, and it is fun.
congrats on the new car and enjoy!!!!

Check out the FAQs at the top of Technical in Under the Hood. There, you will find threads detailing how to do these fluid changes and what kinds of fluids to use in the "Oil Journals" in the same place.
I would suggest you check out the maintenance schedule for the car and check off everything that should have been done to the car up to and including the present mileage and age. Do the ones you feel there is a chance that may not have been done.
You're on the right track - engine oil, tranny fluid, diff fluid. A real good inspection of the fluids and the diff drain plug will tell you a valuable story about the car's history. Read the old plugs. They'll tell you a story as well.
Do a visual of the brake and clutch fluid and decide from there. That tapping could be a valve clearance issue or it could be a camchain tensioner issue. You'll know once the valve adjustment has been completed. If the noise is still there, then look toward the tensioner.
A bottle of fuel injector cleaner in 1/2 a tank of gas at this time would not be a bad idea and it's cheap maintenance.
