Geoff,
This kind of thing has been debated quite a lot within the S2000 Talk forum, and possibly this guy's site has even been referenced. I know that some people have disregarded Honda's break-in recommendations and have written about that.
I will only tell you that Honda provides a fairly comprehensive schedule to follow, and I would be remiss to recommend anything to the contrary. If someone chooses to follow a non-sanctioned method to break his car in, he won't get much sympathy from me, or more importantly from Honda, if something goes wrong.
I would certainly be interested to know peoples' results with alternate methods of break-in, but I would never do it myself or recommend it to someone else.

It even clearly states that this topic is "controversial", so the choice is yours.
My philosophy is that if something goes wrong with your car and you did what Honda suggests, you can at least go back to them (for what good it may do). However, if you went against Honda's recommended break in and the thing broke, well, would Honda look at you with much sympathy? Like I said, the choice is yours.
As for waiting for reports from those who beat the crap out of their S2000s from day 1, I doubt we will hear any reports of the long term effects on the cars. Most of these tend to be young, impatient, sometimes immature and very impressionable individuals. Such people have not been known to keep such vehicles for a long period of time. Their cars usually get sold long before they get "old" and it's up to next poor schmuck to find out, possibly the hard way, that his car didn't grow old gracefully.
