Default to buy or not buy a s2000 from a private party

Hello. I am new in this forum.

I have come across to what I think is a good deal. a 2004 Suzuka Blue S2000 with about 50,000 miles on it, clean. the asking price is $11,000

I have not yet seen it in person, only in pictures. It looks like the car is in decent shape. the bumper front and back seem have some discoloration, the convertible top has a big (6 inches) rip and it looks dirty.
the steering wheel and the black parts in the interior seem kind of faded. It is also suffering from discoloration.

I have spoken to the current owner and it belongs to a widower, she sounds older. about 50+ years old.

She stated that the car has no mechanical issues and no accidents. She stated that the discoloration on the bumper came from a cleaning product that she sprayed on it. She stated that the hole on the convertible top has been repair and no there are no leaks.

my questions are

1) based on everything I mentioned, is this a good deal?
2) how much do you think the bumper repainting will cost?
3) is there anything that can be done for the black interiors? how can we bring it back to life?

thank you for your help.

First of all post the link here so we can see as well!

Secondly and highly recommended, go see it first hand, you have nothing to lose. Then take some close up pictures and post here.
Community will be happy to help! From what I hear, you should be able to negotiate a better price, given the damage. I would worry about the 6 inch rip in the soft top though, not sure how well it has been fixed and if you will have a rubber hose nearby to test it properly

I'm sure in a while someone will post regarding the cost of repainting front bumper. Interior would be the least of my worries as with a $10 cleaning product you should be able to revive it

Best of luck!

For $11,000 you gotta expect some warts. Concours level S2000s sell for much higher prices!

You got that right! $11k for 50K miles isn't a bad deal so long as the car is mechanically sound. As other members have stated, it's best to take a look at the car yourself with your own eyes. Post some photos of it if and when you get the chance!

Thank you for your fast replies. I will be seeing the car this weekend, since I do not have time during the week. I want to go on saturday with a good idea on ho much is the car worth in the conditions described above and on the photos.

OK here are the photos. Hopefully you can see them. Please give me your input

the paint seems a little rough but for the price it should be justifiable. As long as it has been maintained and in good working order id go ahead and buy it.

Wrong wheels for an 04.

I'd go look at it in person, but this one looks to have had a rough 50k mile life, at $11k you shouldn't expect much.

what do you mean wrong wheels for 2004? can you please elaborate?. I might be incorrect but I thought that the 2004 and above AP2 have this type of wheels.

my biggest concern is the slashed top. Has anybody had it "professionaly patched" ?

If I end up bying the car, I plan to keep it for a while, so the paint in the bumpers can be refreshed.

The other issue is that I do not want to pay more than 11,000 + 9% = $11,990 use tax here in CA.

ultimately, my question is: is this car worth $11,000. (I AM PAYING CASH BTW)

'04 came with AP2v1 wheels

In my opinion, the car isn't worth $11K. The exterior, at the least, has not been cared for, especially given how worked over it looks with the relatively low mileage. No telling how bad off the interior may be, and anything that looks that rough I wouldn't trust claims of "no mechanical issues" from someone I didn't know.

I honestly can't afford an s2000 that cost more than 11,000

the s2000 is my dream car and I want to get one that is free of any modifications.

It is very hard to find an AP2 that is stock and for about 2011 with less than 100k miles in Southern California.
