If you can get $13K from your current car, jump on this deal asap before it's gone:
http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/car/427430943.html

You won't have a car payment for long. I have no affiliation to the seller, or any gain from his sale. I was trying to get a friend to buy it as his second car. He is currently looking for a Miata, but doesn't want to spend over $7,500.

What you can "afford" is one of the most complicated financial questions you could have asked.

Do you want to know the easiest yet most accurate answer to this and most questions like it?

If you have to ask, you cannot. When you get the point there is no question as to if you can afford it or not, that's when you can and none sooner.

Plus now comes the 15k in student loans. Regardless if they are deferred or not, the rates are normally at ripoff rates, and should be your main priority to payoff. I calculated about 15k over a 5 year payoff, at 15%, which would be about $357/month.
I like the break down, but I'm going to have to disagree here. My student loans are around 13k and my rate is around 3%. This was during the golden age of low interest (04-05). My friend just consolidated at around 7%.

So, my recommendation to you is to consolidate your student loans asap. Don't drag your feet on this one, my friend did, and hence, he ended up with 7%, instead of 3%. Shop around, there should be a lot of businesses vying for your money. I'm assuming you took out government student loans. If you started off with a bank loan at 15%, then...I'm sorry.

thanks for the replies, negative or not, I appreciate it.

I know the high costs for this car, but cosnidering its a honda, it shouldnt be too bad, right? 20-25 mpg, honda reliability, the only thing i can think of is replacing the tires every year and a few mods that I plan on adding. Insurance came out to be about 700 for 6 months, full coverage, so thats not too bad.

400 rent a month is not good, nor bad. I 'll be rooming with a college buddy and split the costs. 450 includes utilities, heat, etc.

I actually counter offered and am hoping to pull in around 40k, but we'll see. I dont think its too unfeasible, but it seems that most of you guys are pretty conservative with your finances. I'm definitely a low maintanence kind of guy, and dont buy stupid shit, so I should be ok.

Yeah, I definitely need to get rid of my 15k loans first. After that, I'll be good.

In my opinion, being conservative about your finances is the only way to go when you don't make a lot of money. There will ALWAYS be hidden costs that pop up, and it would be wise for you to have some extra cushion to prepare for unexpected costs that WILL arise. You should never calculate your expenses and income so tight that you're down to, say, less than $100 a month leftover, or that could lead to big trouble if something unforseeable should occur.

Regardless, best of luck, and I hope you make the right decision
