Best wishes... make sure you document the trip. I would like to see some pic's; including the look on your wife's face when you pull up!

Thanks to everyone who has been following this saga and for the concerns about my well being. As evidenced by this followup post, I haven't been shot or hacked to death by a chainsaw.

In the end, I decided that negotiation was the best way out of this dangerous predicament, and that I better break the news before I got on the plane. I went with the ole good news bad news angle as the best way to open the discussion. She picked the bad news first. "Well, dear you know that money, that we set aside for the kitchen, remodel? Well... I spent it on a sports car. (same look of incredulity that Jack got when he broke the news to his mother about buying the magic beans) The good news is that I actually didn't spend all of it. (Murderous facial expression easing up just a bit here) There is still enough left that we can still buy all the stuff you wanted... ceramic tile, new appliances, cabinets etc. There just isn't enough for all the labor. I worked out a deal to trade for the electrical work, and I'll lay the tile even though I said I'm sick of tile and I wouldn't do another tile job for the rest of my life. And you know I'm good at hanging cabinets etc."

I really wanted to just pay someone else to do this remodel project but every time I take this car down a twisty road, I tell myself that it will be worth it.

You sound like your quick on your feet with justifications. I need you in my HR department.
