Default Day One in my new (to me) S2000

Happy, excited, proud. Finally pushed my nagging sensibilities aside and bought one of these things. I picked up a black/black 2001 with 51K miles, it's P E R F E C T. The previous owner was clearly a nut. Carfax/AutoFax is clean clean clean, car is in showroom condition, he bought the add-on corrosion & interior stains (on black carpet) scam i mean warranty, and has his oil changes documented in the little owners manual register. Like I said, perfect.

I'm a happy boy. Time to go get sideways.

Don't try to get sideways, sir. Trust me on that. The car can quickly kick your ass and show no remorse. Instead, I'd suggest doing some of the stuff below to get the car up to snuff:

Replace the '01 ECU with an '02/'03 ECU. That'll give you about 8-10 more horsepower at the wheels, cause the car to run less rich, and give better fuel economy. You can get '02/'03 ECU's for dirt cheap, $100 or less.

Replace the AP1 rims with AP2 rims or your choice of 17's. They'll be about as light but allow you to up the tire sizes from the weakass 205/225 to 225/255 or beyond. The car will have much more grip and feel far more planted.

Take out your spare/tool-kit. They're just extra weight.

Replace the stock head-unit and speakers ASAP. They suck major ass.

Go to an autocross or a local track day and learn the car.

After that, the S2000 is your oyster, so to speak. So many ways to go with the car.

Cool thanks for the tips guys!

I've been spending about 10min a day in big empty parking lots getting acquainted with the handling, and I'm getting it down. It rained today and I had a lot of fun at lower speeds working on controlling the car with a little bit of slip angle. I'll definitely be autocrossing it often so it's good to "get to know".

Bolted a set of stock AP1 wheels painted black on it, with stickier 225/50 rubber than the stock/stock set of wheels had. Looks MEAN with black wheels on a black car. I wanted a second set of wheels so I could keep a set of stickies ready to go for autocrosses & track days.

Shopping for that '02-'03 ECU, a rollbar (HardCore), and I need to fix one little exhaust rattle, maybe do a test pipe while I'm down there.

What're the widest tires I can fit on the stock AP1 rims? I love the way it looks with 16's and would like to stay in B-Stock class...

If you want to stay in BS for autox DO NOT change the ECU... that would bump you into either STR or BSP depending on what tires you have. Also, unless you are planning on doing track days there is no need to spend money on an aftermarket roll bar... the stock roll over protection does a good job, and an aftermarket bar will add unneeded weight for autox.

My reccomendations if you are interested in BS is the following and in the following order

1) second set of AP1 wheels with 245/40/16 Hoosier A6 at all four corners (yes they will squeeze onto the fronts just fine)

2) best Front sway bar you can afford, Gendron makes the best for Stock class but its like $650... The saner bar is not as stiff or as nice but does a decent job for about $275

3) A good set of performance Shocks... either revalved Koni Yellows or some $$$ Motons/Penskes/JRZ/AST/Ohlins (the latter bunch require you to basically glue the spring perch into the stock location)

4) Cat back exhaust (single of your choice) and K&N air filter

Now, there are ways to get the Race tires into the car (1 in trunk 3 in passenger seat) but you may want to consider a trailer hitch and a tire trailer.

That is about it for performance upgrades you are allowed in stock.

Read up on the SCCA Solo rule book and remember this IF IT DOES EXPRESSLY STATE THAT YOU CAN DO IT... YOU CANNOT DO IT

Most importantly HAVE FUN!!!!

Pop in over on the Racing and Competition forum, there is some great info on Stock class autox over there
