Hi All, after 30 years of owning every imaginable Honda and Acura, I finally pulled the trigger on a S2000 (2006 with 20K). Putting a list together of maintenance/upgrades. Looking forward to dissecting the forum!
Thanks for the FB link! As I sit here looking at snow out the front window, I've become very jealous of the members in the south that can drive top down year-round!
Nice car. Welcome. I suggest that that very first thing you should do is to check and and adjust the valves unless they have been adjusted very recently. The 2006 and newer ap2s have a tendency to develop tight valve gaps before the maintenance cycle is reached. If you run the car for a long time with tight valves they will burn and then you have a major repair on your hands. If you keep them adjusted they will be trouble free.
With only 20K you will probably be ok for a while. But, don't let it go too much longer. You are in a position with that car to 100% prevent valve burn issues if you catch it now. Maybe start a thread in the "Talk" section, or your regional section, asking for mechanics in your area with experience working on s2ks. Most mechanics working in the dealers have zero experience with this car. But, adjusting valves is actually pretty simple and I expect any careful mechanic (like any home mechanic who is careful) can adjust the valves. Its not rocket science. Ask them to set them on the loose side of spec. Then check them much more frequently than the service interval. I have an ap1. Ap1s don't have this problem (they have their own set of problems). Still, I plan to check mine every 30K miles or so.
Thanks, I have been reading about the tight valve issue...just need to find a mechanic in the area I can trust!
The closest mechanic to Frederick that I'm aware of that I trust my car with is Ben at Daisy Import Auto. He's got a post somewhere on here with feedback. Highly recommended guy in the NSX community as well. Ben's a good guy and great mechanic who has worked on both my s2000's and my 4Runner. If I'm trusting someone to diagnose a real problem or take something significant apart, he's my choice. Woodbine, MD might be a little bit of a hike but having a trustworthy mechanic is worth it.
