How disappointed will I be?
Hi all,
I'm seriously thinking of moving from an FI MX5 to a stock S2k GT. Primary reason is that I've taken the 5 almost as far I feel I can, and feel that if I'm going to make the move, now's the time (before I sink further money into... WI, Port & Polish...).
The 5 is currently delivering 285bhp and 258ftlb torque, is lowered by 30mm and has front/rear sway bars (so handles very well).
If I do make the move, I'd plan to keep the S2k stock for maybe a year or so (or maybe not!), with a view to getting a supercharger bolted on.
My key questions are:
1. How disappointed am I likely to be making this move?
2. What kind of power output might I expect from a supercharged S2k?
3. How much is the conversion likely to cost?
Thanks in advance for all your (non-biased
) responses.

Drive an S first and figure it out, asking this question on an S2000 board won't solicit a lot of unbiased responses anyways.
The MX-5 is lighter than the S2000 and you literally are making 100ft-lbs more torque than a stock S2000. Performance wise I don't even think they'll be in the same league (with the win obviously going to the MX5).
You need to figure out what matters most to you. If you want a stock car that's decently quick and has a warranty then the S2000 will be great. But if you want a fast car with lots of kick then a factory stock S2000 probably won't float your boat compared to what you already own. If you're sick of spending money then a stock S2000 is very reliable, so you'll be happy in that regard.

An otherwise stock Vortech supercharged S2000 will yield ~300 HP at the wheels, Comptech (now closed) yields a little less. If you want to get some extra kick in the S2000 without spending an arm and a leg, try swapping out the final gear ratio. That was the first thing I did and wow what a difference it made.
Let us know what you decide on, both cars have a high fun factor!

P.S. You can find regularly used supercharger kits on this board for sale. I bought mine from another member, polished, 12K miles, missing a fuel pump and hardware for $2,200. MSRP for the Vortech kit is ~$5200.
If you have doubts, just stick with your MX-5. No point switching over if your first reaction is a "How disappointed...." It means that are you expecting disappointment, but just how much. I wouldn't switch cars if I have a tiny ass of disappointment coming.
S/C also have around half the tq that he has. Not to mention a couple hundred lbs lighter. Also consider that performance parts for the S is not cheap at all.
Basically, buy the car if you love it. Meaning no matter good time or bad time, you still love the car for what it is. And don't ask people if you should get a certain car or not. You are the one who is spending the money. Don't come to us if you regret your decision.

You may be disappointed with the initial performance making the cahnge, but you will get an automatic testosterone boost moving out of the Miata into an S2K.
It isn't the same as a classic American muscle car where you have a permanent 5 o'clock shadow and back hair coming through your shirt; but you might end up with a little more chest hair.

he means comptech closed...yes its true they went out of business...
i'll say i was kind of dissappointed in the low end performance of the car...once its in vtec its ok...the test pipe i put on helped out a bit..and like another poster said once i put the gears in it should alleviate the low end thing...
i will say though...your miata is in a totally different league than even a supercharged s...that torque your pushing you'll probably never seen in an s without a built engine.....
the s for reliability is top f'in notch though...there's people who've went over 100k miles and only did the basic maintenance...no money spent on parts that went bad...you really can't find that in any type of sports car IMHO...that was one of my major deciding factors in buying my s...i knew i wanted something sporty but i didn't feel like forking out massive dough to keep up with a turbocharged car(evo, sti, virtually any other sports car thats decently fast).....
go test drive one...or goto a local meet and convince someone to let you drive their supercharged s...
