Default Howdy

Hello everyone, I'm excited to introduce myself as the new owner of a 2000 AP1 S2000 with only 41,000 miles. The car is in outstanding condition and seems like an ideal candidate for a rebuild. I anticipated spending $10,000 to $20,000 to get it into reliable, like-new condition. As a precaution, I'm tackling all maintenance tasks first, despite its apparent good condition.

Driving this car is an absolute blast! Its performance reminds me of a British sports car, but with double the horsepower.

I'd love to hear any advice or suggestions from the community. Specifically, has anyone had experiences purchasing from DanaPort? I ordered Bilstein coilovers a month ago, but they haven't arrived yet. After contacting Bilstein, I found out they have eight pairs of coilovers in stock for the S2000, which raises concerns about DanaPort's reliability.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and experiences.

Welcome to the forums. With the car being pristine and only having 41k on the odo I can't imagine you would need to spend more than a couple grand. Change all the fluids, and get new tires and unless the shocks are blown, you should be good to go. Post some pics of the new care when you get a chance. I know we all love seeing them.

Welcome! If someone has at least been driving it and it has not been poorly maintained or sat for long periods, you really should not need to do much. Stock shocks are great on this car and last a very long time, so unless you just want to change or they are blown then maybe not worth touching. Now if you are doing a track car build or something, there are threads on here that talk all about that stuff. My 2001 with 165,000 miles is mostly used on the track, so they can handle a lot of mileage and remain very reliable cars even under heavy use.

I would get it up on stands or a lift, look for leaks, worn bushings or ball joints, etc first but with that mileage I would not expect anything. I have only replaced some of the bushings on mine, and mostly because I hit a wall on the right side on track and had to replace the control arms on that side when I repaired it.

Would be good to check valve adjustment but again, low mileage likely fine on an AP1.

Change all fluids of course. Use OEM honda filters (for the S2k, it is a different filter than all the other hondas use) and torque it per the directions on the filter. It is one of the few cars that call for higher torque when installing the filter to avoid it coming loose and causing a fire.

Flush the clutch fluid, there are threads about it here. It gets dirty pretty quick. It is a simple job if you do any of your own maintenance.

Given the age alone, when you drop the top, see if it looks like it goes down all the way. If not, raise it, then push back on the center bar when putting it down, if that makes it lower further, then you will need the elastic top straps you see connected to that bar that pulls it back. Super easy to replace. Modifry made them but not sure you can get theirs now but there may be other options. There are also topics on here about that too.

You will be enjoying it for a very long time, they are great cars to drive!
