Just bought an AP1
Hello,
I just got back from Afghanistan and bought a 2003 with 15,xxx miles on it. I've driven turbos in the past but the S2K is remarkable. I really enjoy it. I'm interested in hearing feedback about the suspension differences between the AP1 and AP2. Thanks,
Whitey

First off Welcome back from the sandbox, what branch of service?... congrats on the purchase. I have never really pushed an AP2 but the one I drove didn't seem as exciting to me as my AP1... didnt drive the AP2 enough to figure out why... others will be better at explaining as I to am fairly new.
Welcome Whitey!!
Thank you for your service.
Congrats on your purchase.
The ap1 is frequently called twitchy. The car tends to oversteer very easily. And it also suffers from "bump steer" at the rear when going on rough surfaces (really roll steer if it is caused by the rear of the car, but no one recognizes what you mean if you say roll steer).
The ap2 removed the bump steer with a change in rear suspension geometry. You can get the same effect on the ap1 by purchasing a rear bump steer kit (BSK or also called rear toe links). Megan makes a relatively inexpensive BSK.
The ap2 also reduced the oversteer tendency by using softer rear springs and softer rear swaybar, stiffer front springs and changes in tire sizes (the rears were slightly increased in width and the fronts slightly decreased). BTW, the oem s2k tires are mismarked. The rear ap1 tires are marked as 225, but are closer to a 245; front ap2 tires are marked as 215, but are closer to 195.
Another good mod to help tame the ap1 is to upgrade to 17" wheels and run the same stagger as the CR: 215 front / 255 rear. Dunlop Star Specs are a good tire choice for those sizes.
