Just a friendly hello from the EVO world
Hey guys, I've been browsing this board on and off for the past couple of years and I think its about time I introduced myself. I'm from the tiny country of of Qatar but am currently studying finance in Austin, TX.
My automotive history:
When I first came to the states back in '01 I really wanted to get an s2k but the thing was so new and I couldn't get any breaks on pricing + financial situation wasn't that great so I opted to get a nice little coupe instead, RSX-S. I quickly learned that the FF thing was not for me and the evos were coming out pretty soon in the summer of '03 so I sold the RSX and got the car I currently own, Red Evo VIII. I went kinda wild with the evo in terms of aftermarket (standalone, T-67 etc.) but its now mostly stock. For some reason I just lost my attraction to the car and its definitely becoming a money pit. For example, I just got finished rebuilding the tranny to the tune of $4k. I love my evo but its just gotta go.
Naturally the s2k comes to mind and the question is pretty much when not if.
Most of my friends, however, have said that I have just been too spoiled by the power that the evo puts down and the S2000 might feel too underpowered. What do you guys think?
I have a couple of options:
-Buy a used s2k now.
-Wait until after summer and buy a brand spankin' new one.
I'm definitely keeping this one stock, save for some Volks.
I know most of my questions are subjective, so don't take them too seriously. Just trying to make conversation.

Well, comparably, a stock car compared to a turbo'd car will always seem slower. But as far as the fun dept. goes, I'm sure that you can't miss with the S.
Agreed, the mod bug gets everyone.

Ha the mod bug can easily get anyone but I'm honestly over with all the headache of tuning a standalone, the jerkiness of large injectors and the chatter of twin disk clutches.
I didn't mind for a while but for now I just want something smooth for a change. So how is the shifting on the S? are tranny problems common?
Would you guys say that the s2k is a smooth car? The evo is very mechanical/notchy/clunky.

we all say the modding is done when we buy this car.... and then it bites.. no way around it rofl...
tranny is smooth.. one of the smoothest and best trannies in the world...there is a 1st or 2nd gear rattle i dont' remember but it's nothing major...

Tomato, based on your post though, you better set aside some cash!

The S2000 transmission is a gem. That said, if you're buying used, drive the car and draw your own opinion. If it's not smooth, you might want to consider having a look at the tranny fluid before you buy... Just a thought. I guess I'm saying that it should shift smoothly.
If you choose to go for a new S (MY06, not a leftover 05), you'll be getting yaw control (VSA) and drive-by-wire throttle. So far, what I'm hearing about these options is good, but keep an eye on the threads in our S2000 Talk forum.
Best wishes.
Thanks for all the responses guys, everyone is a newb at some point, right?
Chazmo, thanks for pointing out the VSA, I heard something about it a while ago but it totally slipped my mind. I flipped thru the s2000 talk threads (search function is not working) and impressions seem to be favorable about DBW but I couldn't find any impressions on the VSA. The most important thing I learned is that it can be switched off.
Question: does anyone know if you can switch the speedo readout between MPH and KPH? If I get an S now, I'll probably be taking it overseas in a year.

Thanks again.
As of now, I'm probably gonna wait until summer and then gauge my enthusiasm from there. However, I'm selling the evo in january for sure.
BTW, I'm selling the evo cheap + a lot of small goodies + badass tranny/LSD, pm if interested.
