My Name is Scott, and I am a track junkie.
My addiction has gotten the best of me and I am powerless to stop myself. javascript:emoticon('
')You know the story, it has almost been a year since my first taste of the sweet track nectar. Last October I attended an event at TWS in my 1994 Honda Prelude that had old hard tires. It was disappointing.javascript:emoticon('
Master Apex was nice enough to take me for a ride in his S2000 on a moist track. It was awe inspiring. Passing everything but a 4WD Turbo Porsche. and it was the real deal to me with corner speeds that really got my attention. The S is a car I have lusted after for many years. After that fateful ride, I started considering new tires and brakes for the Prelude. Then I said, WTF, and bought an 2007 Laguna Blue S2000 and have really enjoyed it for the last 10 months.
Now looking at all the upgrades I may do to my 2007 S2000 and considering how tracking a car can be hard on it, getting a track car came to mind.
Does it sound familar so far?
Many such addicts lean toward a Miata and I in fact considered getting Barry's track prepped car that was coming up for sale again. Barry convinced me to stay with the S and take that money and campaign what I have. The urge subsided.
For the last few months there was a particular track ready S2000 which I drove by often at 2222 and 620. A while back while driving by in my mundane Dodge Magnum, I stopped to view the heavily modified car to see what the Real Deal looked like. No test drive was involved, I just sat in the deep racing seat and put my hands on the Momo wheel to feel what it was like. Adorning the A pillar were 2 dark gauges with a shift light nearby that back looked back at me with a blank stare. I thought of how they would provide valuable information when using the hardware at the limits.
The lust for that car has been nagging me ever since. One by one I looked up all the accessories listed in the impressive list, imagining how each of the upgrades may improve my confidence and track times. Of course it was expensive for a second track car. So again I decided to stick with my NA S2000.
Realizing there is more I can get out of the performance machine I already possess, I convinced myself to dance with the one who brung me. After all, the last thing I need is another toy to work on. Shit I don't have enough time to take care of the stuff I already have.
The listing for the car remained on craigslist but had not been visible from the street for some time. Feeling confident I was happy with my S, I stopped by the lot to see if they still had the Real Deal car. Only to take another look at the mods I was now somewhat familiar with. Hell, maybe I would even ask to take it for a spin to see what it was like.
Terry, the owner of the lot comes out and I inquired about the car. He says, "Well, there has been some problems with the car". For a short time I felt good about not purchasing a lemon. He continues to tell me it was broken into while pointing out the camera that recorded the whole thing. Turns out they broke the passengers window to steel the hard top. While they were at it, the quick disconnect Sparko steering wheel was absconded as well.
Terry was selling the car as a favor to the owner who has several expensive vehicles and decided to race prep a Z06 and dump the S. The insurance company paid the original selling price. Terry was able to buy the car for half the latest price, less the hard top, window and steering wheel. Just before the break in occured, Terry bought a S2k Club Racer and was lamenting not taking the race preped S to the track. He went on to tell me about previous offers that were close to asking price
Long story short, he made me an offer I couldn't refuse and I bought the car.
The first time driving the Real Deal was on the way home which took some getting used to. The second drive has helped my confidence. Hopefully I will feel comfortable enough to take it to TWS next weekend . . .
I need to get a new top for it since it was stolen. Also I have been told the SC bearings are starting to make noise and will need some attention.
There is an oil leak that appears to be around the SC bracket/oil hose. Does this sound familiar to anyone?
