New 08 RYP S2K owner here
I've been a german car guy my entire life but have always held a special place for the s2000.
The wife and I were considering a used GT4 or new M2 for some time but decided to invest a bit, and use the remainder for an s2000 while keeping my Golf R for a daily.
Both the R and S2000 fit their niches perfectly. Echoing what every review of the Golf R has already said, it's the best all arounder period imo. Not mega exciting, doesn't really get the blood pumping but you'll be doing 100mph alot quicker than you think because the car makes it feel like 40mph and awd feels great coming out of corners and you can even get it to lift off oversteer on some corners.
The S2000 I picked up is an 08 and came lowered on HKS coilovers. The previous owner kept great recored and even hooked it up with all the oem parts. The OEM hardtop is just icing on the cake. Funnily enough, the first time I almost died in a car was in a red ap1 s2000. The car snap oversteered and spun across an open public road. Was not hooning it or anything, car was just plucky as hell.
The car is amazing. Unlike the golf R, going 45mph feels like 100mph. I've always been a small car kinda guy (old golfs, mini coopers, etc... are my perfect sized cars) and this one just feels so right. Don't plan to mod it out too much but after driving this thing around for a bit now, i already want an AP1 to actually build out.
If you are on the fence about the s2k, just do it. At worst, you will probably come out about even if you ever sell since the prices on these things are getting silly (thanks BaT).
