Default New AP1 Owner

Hey everyone,

Just introducing myself as the new owner of this 02 S. Excited to get some maintenance done and some new tires to take it on the track!

Default Welcome

Congrats!

enjoy the maintenance phase. When I first got my S it had massive oil leaks and some old ass tires. Just fixing it up and getting it running right was incredibly rewarding. Working on these cars it awesome, makes you appreciate Honda’s design even more.

Car looks great!

Work your way fairly slowly into the corners as -- as you'll find out! -- our cars don't handle like Civics and the early cars are infamous for unexpected oversteer which can send you off the road even in innocent corners like roundabouts and interstate ramps. Cornering is good until it isn't. The car is sensitive to mis-matched tires (and pressures) and deserves Summer tires. Handling and wear are locked together but I've given up on less-than Extremes as I don't put enough miles on the car annually to make any financial difference.

If you're serious about track use you may want to consider fitting some OEM 17" "AP2" wheels as there are several times more tire options in that size. These wheels simply bolt on the car with no concerns about wheel offset or speedo/antilock brake issues. Used sets are frequently for sale here.

What would you suggest to be a good and proper tire size for a 17" wheel, front and rear for track and for daily use?

Opinions are like butts -- we all have one! But I'm running Bridgestone RE-71RS Extreme Performance Summer tires on OEM AP2V2 wheels in "CR" sizing. 215/45-17 front, 255/40-17 rear. (UTQG 200.) Previously ran Bridgestone RE-11A (200) and S04 (250?) tires in the same sizes; both discontinued. Wore out the RE-11As at about 11,000 miles and a couple of years; the SO4's aged out at 7 years and maybe 15,000 miles. I've seen 225/255 size recommended here but the 215 fronts with 255 rears have cornered well for me for 10 years. Those big rear tires look good as well. UTQG 200 tires wear fast even on the road and will wear faster on the track.

For daily use the Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 tires (UTQG 340) despite being "only" Ultra performance (3d tier) are very popular, are just over half the cost of the RE-71RS tires, and won't wear out in so few miles. These are rebranded Bridestones and handle competently on the track. The RE-71-RS tires are literally vanity tires on my car -- much more capable than I am.

I'm currently on the stock AP1 wheels with 205/55 front and 225/50 for rear tires. I am looking to upsize to 17" wheels, not sure which style or if to go with oem depending what I find on the market place. The problem I encounter is that the offsets of wheels I see for sale are between like +30 and +45 which would stick too far out. So hard to find the correct offsets so that's one reason to try and find an OEM set from the AP2 and know they will work well for sure.
