New member/future import from QC, need some hints!
Hi guys. First of all sorry if my english is not perfect, I'm from QC.
I'm a future owner of a AP2 (26 years old). I start to look for importing a car from the US by myself. I really don't know how it works in the US if u want to sell a car. So maybe u guys can help me. Here in QC the seller and the buyer goes the a bureau called SAAQ and the swap of ownership is made there. How exactly the transaction would go if I go to NJ for exemple to buy a car from someone there.
Any help to import a US car would be really a big +.
Thanks in advance guys!
Phil

Welcome to the site
I think they have recently changed the laws for exporting used cars to the US, but as long as it will pass US inspection the sale shouldn't be too hard at all. Just some more paperwork I would imagine. Ill look into this later since you can import a used car into Canada that is 14 years old, which means you guys can easily get some JDM cars that we can't. The question though is how to get them back to the US easily and not with much extra cost.

I give the cash to the seller and he give me the slips & car. Thats it thats all? If u buy a used car in the US u don't have to pay any tax whatsoever or when u want to register the car to the dept of motor vehicles your getting tax for the car you just bought? thx again

I'm not sure about New Jersey, but in Georgia, you do not pay a sales tax when purchasing from a private seller, only an ad valorem tax at the time of registering the vehicle.
Are you paying out of pocket or are you getting a loan? Many times your lender will know the answers to these questions, and if the vehicle you're purchasing has a lien on the title and is held by another lender, they may need to work directly with the other financial institution.

When you register in Cali they charge you a registration fee, it's not a sales tax. But you won't have to deal with Cali DMV since presumably you are going to register in QC?
Yes I'm gonna register in QC. I think I'm gonna have to pay the TPS (5%) when crossing the border and the TVQ (7,5%) when I will register the vehicle here. Plus the tax for the RIV at the borders.. Yes I'm gonna have a loan on it but it wont be related to the car. Thanks guys for helping me! =)
