After first getting a Honda Del Sol Si in 2009, enjoying it immensely but secretly wishing for a DOHC, I was fortunate enough to find a 2006 NFR with just 17k on the odometer. I'm the third owner. The first owners were northern snowbirds who kept the car garage in Florida and only put 2K miles on it in four years. Second owner was a grandmother who now needs a SUV to tote around the grandkids.

I had the car inspected at Townsend Honda, where it was serviced, and all is good except it needs new tires (currently Bridgestone Potenza's). I've had good luck with Michelins, so I am thinking of ordering a set of Primacy MXM4 from Costco (about $750 installed, plus tax). My old Del Sol had Pilot Sports but since I can't rotate the tires on the 2000, I'm thinking the Primacy will last longer (60K tread life if rotated,30k if not according to Michelin website). I'll be giving a bit of grip/performance compared to a "summer" tire. What do you think about the tires?

No offense but an allseason tire wont do this car justice. Atleast get an oem equivalent. Welcome and enjoy her.

Agree.

and..

Factors to remember in your tire planning -

- never mix tires, even worse for the handling potential of the car and hazardous in some situations.

- rears wear out 2x-3x faster than the fronts ( depending on your driving style). This can trap you in a specific brand/model if you don't want to toss some fronts with lots of good tread every 10K miles.

- although there are better High Perf tires available now, the S2000 was designed and setup for the Potenza's. Unless you're a highly expert and experienced driver, I don't think you'll experience the benefit of the change.

If all four Potenza's are worn out, I'd go with a High Perf that you can live with long term,replacing on a 2-4-2 etc schedule about every 10-12K miles.

If one pair of the Potenza's has good tread, I'd install another pair and you'll be good for at least 10k as you learn the car.

Just noticed that the car has 17k-

The rears are either totally shot or have been replaced and the fronts should have another 10k in them. You should learn the car before you do all 4. For Potenza's this is about $1100, I think.

Thank you for the feedback on the tires. I will stick with a performance tire. I'll probably also invest in the lifetime alignment option $170 at Firestone and get it checked every 6 months or so. I plan on owning this S2k for a very long time.

Thanks. This maintenance information is exactly what I needed. I'm going to visit my honda mechanic this week and get the stuff beyond my capabilities done. While it's great the car only had 17k, it is 8 years old so I want to make sure everything is up to date and correct before I really start driving it... it's all important but it was very helpful to read the post about the exhaust valve gap being potential tight.

How you liking it?

You may have already gotten tires, but if not, another vote for a performance tire. I have Hankook Ventus V12’s. They grip good in rain and were much cheaper than your quoted all-season price.

As far as maintenance, follow the guidelines in the link and DIY it all. These cars are fairly easy to work on, and most Honda mechanics don’t have much (if any) experience with them.

Congrats on such a low mileage car (from a MSU Bulldog).

First where in Alabama are you located. I live in Mobile. First just learn the car. Don't turn the VSA off on a public street. The tire choice is very important if you stay with the tires you will be good on just about any tire. This is not a straight line car its for twisty. Welcome to the S2000 community and enjoy this great car.
