New Owner
Bought my new Rio Yellow 2007 S2k last week for $5,100 below MSRP (under $30k)... seemed like a pretty good deal. I've been looking at getting a drop top for some time now. Honestly, I was considering getting a Boxster S... the thing was incredible. However, $63k+ (for the configuration I would buy) is a big chunk of change... and I wasn't too fond of the interior. The S2k was more comfortable for me. I figured the S2k would give me 95% of the fun for 50% the price!
I also looked at the new 2008 Audi TT... Audi makes the best interiors in the business and the exterior of the new TT is much better in person than in pictures. The 3 layer top is really well built too. I drove the 2.0T FWD and the 3.2 AWD versions. The 2.0T ONLY comes in a DSG (yes, i know they changed the name)... yes, it's faster than a manual... but, it still ain't that fun.. for me at least. The V6 isn't too bad, but the quattro takes it's toll in terms of curb weight and drive train losses with the quattro. On paper it's faster than the 2.0T, but it doesn't feel that much faster. Overall, still much better (and lighter) than the MkI TT, but I would never buy a DSG (despite all the awards)... and the V6 (although more powerful) is somewhat archaic when compared to the 2.0T gem of an engine which is a tuner's dream. Also, the TT was still $18k (equipped) more than the S2k. AND, it was less fun to drive than both the boxster and the S2k... but, great for just cruising around.
So, when the dust settled, the S2k remained the ride of choice. After a week of driving it, it has exceeded my expectations... and, I still haven't wrung it past 6k rpm d/t engine break-in period. More comfortable than expected and the ride is less harsh than my GTI! That surprised me quite a bit. Can't wait to take it up to Big Basin or Tahoe to really get a better idea what this thing can do.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to being part of the s2k community!
Take care all AND safe motoring!
Chris
