Newb from Chicago Area
Hello everyone...
I do not have an S2000 just yet, but I joined this site to get some more information, possibly purchase one, and hopefully make a friend or two. =)
I'm Selling one of my 'toys' tonight, and looking for more practical toy and I think S2000 might fit the bill. Between my wife and I, we currently own MKIV TT Supra and 1986 Fox Mustang Vert... For DD, we use GS430 and 4Runner.. the Mustang is leaving us tonight.
I know nothing about S2000, and I have bunch of questions, and I know I should be doing the 'search', but being at work and our network being really slow, I was hoping some of you can answer me off top of your head.
1. timing belt or chain? if chain, do I need to replace it at some point? (I'm guessing this car has interference engine?)
2. HWY gas mileage? if you drive like a normal human being, which I'm sure it's hard to do with S2000, what kind of mileage are you getting?
3. Winter driving. Is it drivable in snow?
I can do basic maintenance on my own, like changing the plugs, oil changes, etc... in general, is this car a DYI'er friendly?
Your answers would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!!!!
James

Hi James,
The Upper Midwest has a great s2000 community. Check out the regional subforum. We meet up a lot and are pretty active.
To answer your questions
1. Timing Chain. I haven't heard of anyone needing to replace one, but the timing chain tensioner can sometimes need some attention
2. When my car was bone stock, it was easy to get 30-31 hwy mpg. Realistically, look to the 26-28mpg here in the midwest terrain
3. A lot of people drive them through winter here in Chicago with winter tires. If you want an added safety net, look to the 06+ which has traction control.
Good luck!

I live in CA and I own a bone stock AP1, and the highest I've gotten was 27 mpg. AP1's should get a little more mpg than AP2's because of the smaller engine and lighter flywheel. I hope you can use that to help you. Welcome!

Hey man, local here. aCab is right on point. Winters here are doable with some winter tires. I daily drove my through 3 winters here and not one problem with my blizzaks.
imo the car is very DIY friendly, I haven't come across something I or my local friends couldn't fix.
See ya around man, as a matter of fact, there's a meet this saturday if you can come out.
