I don't think there is any problem - The S has a driect shift gearbox, so you can feel the mechanical parts doing their business. I do think the early S2000s had a TSB for something, but I don't really know.

Mine does it occassionally, but its more driver error than the car.
In all seriousness, make quick, sharp, and firm shifts and you will never here a grind. The only times it does grind frome 1st to 2nd is when I make a sloppy, unprecise shift because I am trying to drive the car too nicely.
