based on your age and willingness to stay stock tells me that you would like the more torque and "softer" feel of the AP2.

if you're in a colder climate- get a 2002 or new model for the glass back window.
ap1 vs ap1 is like red delicious vs granny smith: it's apples to apples but with a slight difference in taste

Love that 9,000RPM redline on my ap1 but the ap2 has larger wheels so there is a better assortment of tires available. I am having trouble finding 245/45X16 for the rear of mine.
Are you comfortable with more shifting? The ap1 has no torque below 3,000 RPM. 3,000 to 6,000 is about like your Miata. 6,000 another motor kicks in.
Miata Torque starts at 4000 then it's nifty shifty 4-7000, this little
cart has been a lotta fun, straight up therapy. I even drive with the top
down in the upper 30's here in Durham,N.C. so for me top down year round.
With your extra 100 horses I bet your lower revs still pull harder
than mine.

Best advice is to read through the AP1/AP2 specs and pick out which one you like the best.
With a 16k price range you could buy an ap1 or an ap2 depending all on the miles of the used vehicles.
The best advice given in this thread so far has been to test drive both an ap1 and an ap2 and then make a decision to what model s2000 will fit your needs the best. Once that is established it will be easy enough to find one in your budget.
Good luck and welcome
