picking up my 1st S this weekend
Hello everyone. I've been lurking around this board for about a month. I'm going to check out a BB S2k tonight in NY. If everything checks out, I'll be driving it by sunday! I'll be using it for a daily driver, even through the winter, so I'll be picking up some good snows over the weekend as well.
Right now I have an 84 VW GTI. I rebuilt the engine 50k ago (like 8 years). It's fully worked, bored, ported, all that good stuff. It's a blast... I figure about 160hp, which makes a 1900lb car pretty quick
she gets covered up for the winter.
I also have a 93 Audi UR S4. pristine condition until I smacked into a wall. so she's under a blanket for the winter as well.
This will be my 1st japanese car, and I just wanted to saw hiho!

Get boned up QUICKLY about winter driving and winter care for your car. Tires are absolutely essential for a daily winter driver in the north east. My strong recommendation is for Bridgestone Blizzak WS-50 tires. Stay away from the LM-22s -- they're good in cold but not in snow.
You also want to consider an immediate diff fluid replacement with something that's not overly viscous in the cold (some folks use stuff like LE607 in the diff that doesn't work well in sub-zero temps)... For that matter, you should replace all the fluids as soon as you can just so you can be sure. Finally, test your battery.

Thanks for the input. I was planning on changing the diff fluid, oil, spark plugs, and possibly transmission fluid right away. I know there are detailed FAQ discussing all of this, so I'll have to look around.
The car has very low miles, just over 8000. The owner as installed a battery charger. the cable comes out from the front and plugs into the wall. He used this since the car was onviously not driven very often (1400 mi/year).
I hope this car is as perfect as the owner claims so I can make the purchase.

anyway. I just got back from checking out the car. It was immaculate. 7980 miles on the clock when I got there. 7995 when I left. has lojack and aftermarket components with tweeters installed.
The engine looked brand new. no oil, no dirt. paint looked brand new. fluid levels all ok. engine pulled hard to 9k. no noise from the diff.
It was difficult to find anything wrong with the car. The only things I could find were a small bump in the rear plastic window, and some slight surface rust around the bushings on the large rear wishbone. The previous owner is an older gentleman who only drove the car around his house in the hamptons every now and then. never snow, he could only remember one time it was even in the rain. Generally he said he drives him MGB so the s2k rarely saw daylight from under its cover.
So we did some quick negotiating, and I bought the car! I should be able to drive it home sunday

One last thing. I don't know how long it's recommended that you leave in the factory oil, but it got changed out with non synthetic a couple times already. Will this have an adverse effect on the motor?
