Not true. I've been getting around very well in my dd s2k in the snow, including the 11" dumping that wreaked havoc on Providence-Boston last month.

Appropriate tires for usage are a MUST! My S is on Dunlop WinterSport SP's (3D/M3). Gets around on the snow as well as my wife's Mazda3 on all-season ContiExtremeContacts.

If you want to do your own repairs, the s2k will be easier than the Boxster for sure.

There is really an impressive amount of room in the engine bay for a sports car. Clutch change requires a bit more effort and replacing the top is arduous. Other than that, I've had a friend pull the head off his car in my garage with fairly common tools in less than 2hrs.

To make up for the short commings you mention, check out Racelogic's traction control...it is a bit pricey though. The ap1 does have a pretty good cupholder. I think the ap2's cupholder is hidden in the center console...slide the lid back and there is a button that releases a spring loaded cupholder.

I owned a 99 Boxster, prior to purchasing my S2000.
I thought the Boxster would be a good daily driver, especially since it has two trunks and a bit more spacious interior.
I bought the Boxster with about 36k miles on it. I sold it within 9 months (9k miles), after spending about $3k in repairs. Maybe my Boxster was "lemon" and not representative of the typical Boxster.
I have not had any mechanical issues with my S2000, after 83k miles.
I find much more enjoyment driving the S2000 as well, especially the handling and "Vtec" sound.

If you must have a Boxster, get the newest "S" that you can reasonable afford.

Good Luck in your decision

And i would highly suggest to refrain from using that center console cup holder. During spirited driving it can lead to miss shifts or accidental downshifts. So back to the the OP stated... no cup holders.
If you're going to be doing spirited driving, don't bring a cup along... bring a bottle of water or something and put it behind the hump underneath your legs. The cup holders work fine for regular driving.

Let me start by saying I am a Porsche fan. That said, the 986 is a poor representation of a Porsche, the 986S is a bit better but still not enough to risk the potential expense to repair. The 987 is a much more complete car, shares a lot of parts with the 997, if money were no issue and you were comparing a 987S vs. a S2000 and didn't mind spending $30k more, I'd say the Porsche is the clear winner. If I replace the S2000 with another roadster the only other thing around right now that I like is the 987S but right now I have no reason to even think of such a thing, I really like the S2000. If my house was paid for, I had every toy I ever wanted, traveled enough to suit my desires and still had money left over, I would be driving the 987S right now, but as it stands I'd rather enjoy life more and drive a cheaper car.

Being a former P-car owner myself I would advise the S2k over a boxster any day of the week and twice on saturday. I looked at a boxster myself before buying my S and the decision was made when I saw what a nightmare it would be to do any kind of maintanence through that small opening for the engine. Any major work you'd have to drop the motor out the bottom. Now if your in a financial position to afford a certified Porsche mechanic then go with the Boxster for the as you say penis factor. But if you want a real "connected" driving experiance then get the S. Basically feels like an extension of yourself as you point it into the turns and sweep through them like your on rails.

Either way happy motoring.

There is an access panel in the cabin that allows most minor service, dropping the engine would only be for major jobs.
