Default S2K in Singapore

I have to be crazy but about 2 months ago I took the plunge and ordered a Deep Burgundy Mettalic Type V. Now, as you may know, Singapore is probably the most expensive place to buy a car. My car is being shipped from Tochigi, Japan, as we speak via a parallel importer, and the car is costing me .... SGD 146,000 (US$ 91,875) !! Yes, I kid you not. Singapore cars are taxed at 140% (luxury tax), plus we have to buy a license for each car which lasts 10 years, so my new S2000 will cost close to US$ 100,000 !!! (luckily the normal length for car loans here are 7 years or else I couldn't afford the monthly payments !). I should add that we get a good portion of the money back from the govt when we sell the car so we are not certifiably insane ! Anyways, it will be here in 3 more weeks and I just can't wait !
It's a 2.2 litre Japanese domestic model, so slightly different from y'alls. And believe it or not, it is relatively cheap for this class of car. For example, a BMW Z4 and an Audi TT costs US$ 125,000, a Lotus Elise 111R costs $ 150,000. So actually, in Singapore, the S2000 is priced at the same price as a BMW 320i. (not bad eh?) Anyways, I can't wait. My manual is gonna be in Japanese, so I'm relying on this forum for huge amounts of information ! Will post pics on arrival ! (There are less than 10 S2000's in Singapore since the Honda dealerships don't stock them, but order them following placement of a deposit).

Question. In America, our median income is $40,000/year. What is your median income there? If you scale the cost, it looks like the median income should be roughly $100,000/year. Is everyone in Signapore rich?

I do not think that median income is that high in Singapore. Almost everything cost less in USA than almost anywhere else, except Middle-East. That why we can afford many things, include cars, that is hard to own somewhere else.

I'm pretty sure the median income is lower in Singapore. I'm guessing half of what it is in the U.S., if not lower.
Have fun with your car, SingaporeS2K.

The median income is about USD$35,000. +/- $5,000 to give you a rough idea. I might be a little optimistic even with my estimation.

But yes, Singapore is probably the most expensive place in the world to purchase and own a car and the cost of property is hella expensive too and it'll almost certainly end up being a small or medium apartment. What's even crazier is that car prices have come down significantly over the last decade. Crikey!

Geez, what kind of work do you do? Enjoy the car thoroughly, top down in Orchard Road and Mhd Sultan is the way to pose.

I'm originally from Singapore but I'm working here in Ireland now. It is sooo expensive to own a car. Hence me having 3 over here. Good luck with the S2000. It has given me both heart ache and great joy... especially when you 're just hitting the VTEC. :-)

Take care.

Thanks y'all. Nope not everyone is rich in Singapore, but there are no homeless ! Income tax is super low, and the govt forces you to save up to buy a house, so almost everyone is a homeowner by the time they are 40. Top down in Orchard....can't wait. And housing is cheap here compared to Tokyo or HK. Life is good. I spent 15 yrs in Tokyo before coming here. Everything is super cheap here except for liquor, cigs, and cars. Soon as I break in my new baby, I'm gonna drive up to Sepang circuit in Malaysia (about 300km drive) and take her for a spin around the F1 circuit. (They open up the circuit once a week to clubs etc and for 140 Ringit you can pretend you are Button !)

Sing, when you get your car, definitely head up to Sepang, but *take it easy* for a while as you get used to it. Track is definitely the best place to hone your skills and stretch your limits, but it takes a while to get used to the S.

Our best wishes. As you know, neither that color nor the VGS are available in the US, so we're all interested in how it works out for you.
