Sold a Boxster to get a S2000
Greetings all. I just bought a S2000 (a yellow 2006, used, with 6k miles) and wanted to say hi. I'll apologize for a long, rambling post. So, either pop open a cold one and settle back for a loooong read, or skip this rant completely. These are also just my own personal thoughts; there are few absolute
You have come to the right place. Thanks for the insightful and candid thoughts, members often ask about comaprisons between Boxsters and s2000s. Honda clealry engineered the crap out of this car and didn't look at it as a profit center. You can spend a bunch of $$ on mods chasing scant few 1/10ths of seconds - its that good right out of the box. Be sure to check out the vintage subforum as well as car talk, sounds like you would find both of those places interesting. Welcome aboard.
wow great insight, thanks for sharing. for the S to be at or near the top of your list of all the cars you've driven is high praise. hope you find the forum a great place to learn and share your vast experiences with us. welcome aboard.
I must say that I agree. I have owned a Porsche 944 (ok so not a 911 but a great car all the same), for over 8 years now. I absolutely loved the car. Now it is an early 85 and anyone that knows Porsche knows that this is a car that still maintains the European look and feel. I would not have bought one that was newer.
I was completely ripped off by the dealership. I was paying on average $300.00 per tune up. I was particular and insisted on original Porsche parts though. Clutch cost me $2,300.00, two water pump and timing replacements (common on the 944) at $1,500.00 each.
I got a clunking sound coming from under the car. I'm thinking a CV joint or something. I take it in and they say the same thing, leave it with us. Get a call back in an hour, we think it is your transmission and it will take $1,000.00 for us to take it down and have a look. I say OK (love my car). Get a call back, yup transmission is shot needs a rebuild parts and labor is about 1,600.00 and parts are not available here they have to come from Germany. It is two weeks from Christmas..., I say OK. They ask would you like it sent priority or normal. Figuring nothing is priority at Christmas, I say normal please. I wait 4 weeks. Oh and because my car is ONLY a 944, no loaner vehicle for me so they say. Anyway I get a call my car is ready come pick it up. I figure I'm looking at a bill of about $2,800.00. I arrive to a bill of over $4,200.00 including priority shipping (did I mention I waited 4 weeks?). They charge me $25.00 per hour over the estimate stating our prices went up. The price when up January 1st but they had my car since early December... They give me a $500.00 discount.
Final straw was I just get my car back from having that transmission issue fixed. Next day I am driving to work and all of a sudden no power and more smoke than I have ever seen coming out the back. I pull over and let the car idle, no smoke and the car actually sounds good. I try to hobble home and as soon as I get to about 3grand on the tac same thing happens. Car still sounds good and moves. As long as I don't let the rev's get up. I call a tow truck and drive it onto the back and off we go to the dealer.
Dealership has the car for about an hour and they tell me the engine is no good. I ask for an explanation what do you mean by no good? The Service writer tells me the mechanic just said the engine is shot. I said but I drove the car after this and it sounded great, I drove it off the flatbed truck into your shop..., She says she will check with the mechanic and get back to me.
Couple of hours and I get a call, it might have something to do with an oil cooler or something (I'm not even listening anymore) she says it will cost $500.00 to determine if that is the problem. I have water in my oil but no oil in my water..., I say stop! I pick up my car and take it to another mechanic that was referred to me..., It was a seal that he fixed for $250.00 and it took 2 hours.
I drive the car for about a week and going down the highway I hear a boom from under the car and no power. I can push the pedal to the floor and it rev's up fine but no power. I pull over and look under the car..., both of my axels in the rear were hanging on the ground disconnected from the transmission. I tow it back to the mechanic and he says that the bolts fell out and the only way that could happen is the last people that worked on the transmission forgot to tighten the axel bolts..., He pops more bolts in and $20.00 later I'm on my way...,
I drove the car for another 3 months with no problems and now the car is running great once again. I purchased the S2000 just because I wanted to try a newer sports car and heard great things about it. I imported the car from Florida without even taking a test drive in one.
No mistake though, I love the S2000. Maybe not as fast as the Porsche but it handles better. My Porsche now sits beside the garage under a tarp, fully insured but I want to drive my S all the time. My son is turning 16 in November so it may have a new driver or I may sell it, but I must agree that this car is fantastic.
I had a '76 fiat X1/9 and the S sort of reminds me of that car, not it the power but in the handling and the smile it put on your face to drive it.
Oh and I'm 48 years old...,

My issue with Boxters and Miata's and Mustangs and Z3 an Z4 is there are too damn many of them. I see an S maybe once a week here on the Island, if that. I can guarantee you will see at least 3 of each of those other cars any given day..., I wanted something that wasn't common. Even as you go to meets you notice that almost no two S2000's are the same. We add our personality. That is what makes it special..., I have met the nicest people since purchasing my S as well. No regrets here at all.

This ought to be the BEST write up on car comparisons I ever read. I will probably save this as a favorite, print it out, and let a lot of "Euro badge tards" read this.
Good job
, nice write up, and welcome to the s2000 community.
Good job
