Trying to decide on S2K or 350Z
hello, new to this forum
i am not yet the owner of the S2000,
however i am willing to purchase one of the vehicle
that i've stated on the title, and start researching on both....
My purchase date would be around next summer, for my high school graduation gift from
my parents (only the downpayment though)..
I am thinking between purchasing 03 S2k and 04 350z, both will be used.
Some of my friends are telling me to get the Z,
saying that it is more for everyday use and is better,
but i can't resist the high-revving motor of the F20c which has the redline of 9k..
(the reason i am trying to get the '03)
I know this is the S2000 forum, but if you guys were to choose between these
two cars, which one would you choose and why?
Currently I am driving 2004 Honda Accord EX-L 4cyl.
and how much should I pay for nicely cared car whichever it is?
Also when i buy either one it will be used everyday
and will keep the car after college graduation and buy another car.
I would be happy to get any inputs from you guys
and thanks in advance for your input and have a nice day

Yo Dawg I would definitely go wit da 350Z man itz mad fast yo. it has so much more horsepower then the s2000. The convertible on the s2000 subtracts horsepower because it can't go as fast at RACER SPEED.
and remember
Ask any racer, any real racer, it doesn't matter if you win by an inch or a mile, winnings winning

I have owned both cars (had 04 350z and currently have 02 s2k) and have to say that both are great cars. Which is better really depends on your needs and what you want in a car. I agree with your friends that the 350z is probably the better "everyday" car as it is more comfortable (more room) and has a bit more storage space. Also the coupe is a bit more practical for everyday in terms of all weather use. The 350 is also very torquey and generally easier to drive fast where the s2k takes a bit more skill to really get the most out of. The Z also has a very nice exhaust note where the s2k's is more subdued. That being said, I'd say the s2k is more fun to drive overall. Its much smaller and lighter that the 350 so you feel much more connected to the car and the road (just my opinion) than in the 350. Also, nothing beats the thrill of winding the engine up to 9k rpm. The first time I drove the s2k and felt the vtec kick in was more thrilling that anything I've experienced in the Z. I'd also say honda reliability is a bit better than Nissan's. Although I never had any trouble with my Z I know others have had some issues, although most seem to be fairly minor. Bottom line-if you're leaning towards practicality, go for the Z, if you want pure thrills, go for the s2k.
By the way, if you do go for an 04 Z, be sure to get a late 04 Z as opposed to and early 04 model. Nissan made some changes to the car at the 04 1/2 mark that are fairly significant (suspension, interior). Also the late 04s and later models seem so be doing somewhat better in terms of the tire feathering issue that has plagued some Zs.
In terms of price, I paid 23k for my 02 last year with 19k miles on it. I would expect you should probable expect about the same now for an 03 with similar miles.(maybe slightly less) I would expect a couple grand more for the Z with similar miles. Regardless of which car you get I would look for one with low miles.
Anyway, hope this helps, I'm sure you'll be happy with whichever car you choose...

for the OP, I would go with the s2000
my two favorite cars. i'm in the process of selling my car to buy an s2000, but that's only because i can't afford the 350z while i'm in school. in my opinion, these two cars are on opposite ends of the spectrum...the 350z is more of a muscle car with its fat body, heavier weight, and potent VQ engine, while the s2000 is light, nimble, and high revving. the 350z feels much heavier, yet is still very flat through corners. it's also happy in just about any gear you put it in. the 350z has no problem swinging the rear end around with just a slight jab of the throttle...luckily it has traction control, which is very well implemented, allowing a conservative amount of wheel spin before intervention. on the other end of the scale, the s2000 feels much more precise to drive. i think the steering, shifter, and clutch feel much better in the s2000. this is definately one of those cars that go much faster than it feels. torque is what you feel, which unfortunately the s2000 doesn't have much of...but since it doesn't have traction control, that's ok with me, as it will be my first RWD car.
if you can't decide which one to get, test drive them. if you still can't decide, test drive them again...as many times as it takes until you confidently choose one over the other. it might not matter with a minivan, but in my opinion, the way a car feels is the most important quality in a car like this.

for the OP, I would go with the s2000
