I noticed it when cleaning today. Why is there such a huge cutout over the plate- you can see completely under the trunk. Can't say I have ever seen anything like that before- what is the purpose?

I think it is probally because of weight reduction. Just kidding, if i am thinking of the same thing then i believe there is a light that shines down onto your liscence plate up there when it is dark.

I see the light attached to the front edge of the hole but it could have just been put into a cutout the size of the light rather than cutting a hole 10X bigger than the light- every car I have ever had came with a license plate light but none were in a hole bigger than the size of the fixture...

Yeah I noticed this as well.....going to make a piece of polished sheet metal to be used as an insert since I don't like the hole either.

If you were slammed then it's not as noticeble but at stock ride height it's clearly visible....

It's on the RSX too. When I first saw it on my girlfriend's car, I thought someone tried to cut their way into her trunk

Maybe its a hidden vent? Some aftermarket rear bumpers have visable cutouts to relieve some of the air that gets 'stuck' there.

That's an idea about venting- maybe for the exhaust? I also noticed the rear wheel wells are pretty sparsely trimmed out. I would guess weight savings but also maybe to vent some heat....
