Default Cams.

Has anyone had any experience with aftermarket cams on the S? Was there a big power gain w/ tuning? Do some cams still keep V-tech?

Any info is much appreciated.

Thanks.

Cams are not an effective upgrade when used in conjunction with common bolt-on modifications. Unless your intake manifold or a similar major component is modified, the stock cams are great for a relatively stock set-up.

cams are a good upgrade if you are using the cams with the proper additional work, such as a ported and polished head, a port matched intake manifold, a port matched big bore throttle body, and a really good header and exhaust system...all this used in conjunction with a proper tune, using aem ems and youre looking at some hefty gains.

as for cam types, toda is the best out there, but there spec a cam is pretty mild...the also make a spec b and c, but both require using their high compression piston kit along with it..

hope this answered your question

I concur... they are all but worthless power wise without head work, raised compression (read: pistons... there is no headgasket method that can be used with aftermarket cams), and stand alone engine management... ITBs would be a plus at that point... regardless you are talking about 8-10k...

Toda Spec C cams do show good gains, but like said above, there is a lot of work on top of the cams that is required.

For the Toda's you need to also get:
Piston kit - $1200
Valve springs - $400
Cam gears - $700
probably EMS ~ $1500

then the cams - $1100

So about $5000, but if you also have a good header (J's), good exhaust (J's 70, Amuse R1000, T1r 70), intake, bigger throttle body, and a little headwork done at the same time you'll see good gains. My guess is at least 20hp possible due to: compression raised, headwork at the same time, and the Spec C cams.

Alone its not worth it, but if you already have intake/exhaust/header/throtle body/testpipe then they can show decent gains.

If you wait a few years I'll tell you how it works out. Although, I probably wont do cams alone. Since I may opt for 2.2L at that point and do everything at once, 2.2L crank, stronger con rods, Toda pistons, ported/polished head, valve springs/retainers, and cams. With all of that at once, hopefully I can show people the S2k can be an N/A beast. Couple years though

It's possible to get 20 hp without cams and head work.

Yes...I already have. Look at my mod list, I'm making about 220-225whp. I don't have that much
