Default Dyno Proven mods?

Looking to add 20whp in a cost effective, reliable way. I know enough of you guys have done it and dynoed the car, so let me know. I want to avoid the SC/Turbo route, and I know head work w/ems will do it but I'm looking at $3k.

I also want opinions on final drive gears, I hear you can have them bought and installed for $1k and gain .5 seconds in the quater????

Get a custom made 70mm/2.75" single exhaust (4-500) and a used VAFC2 (175) with tuning (150). That should give you 20 hp for less than 1000 dollars.

It too bad this had to be posted 12 times in the various communities. Good luck with having multiple knowledge threads.

PM versionJDM, I believe he made his own exhaust for about $400 and sourced out the piping at a local store/shop.

I'd like to do the same. Just picked up a MY00 and trying to get up around 220whp where my e36 M3 was. $1k is a great budget for now.

Will the exhaust violate CARB? Need to stay CARB legal. And you mentioned custom. Any good places to source this? Or any pre-fabbed ones?

Also, how loud would this setup be? This is a DD, and I don't want to be significantly louder than stock.

You can stay legal, have the exhaust shop weld a bung for your o2 sensor.

Most singles are significantly louder than stock. There are very few exhausts available for the S2k that both make power (or don't lose any) and are as quiet as the oem.

Best mod for an '00 is a tuned VAFC. Don't know if those are CARB...but you can pretty easily remove them for inspection. '00-01 had the most conservative and rich fuel maps. You can pick up 10-12hp immediately with that.

When you can afford another $1000-1600, go with gears. They won't get you more hp, but acceleration will be much quicker than the e36M3. Most like the 4.56 gears that both Hardtop Guy and Rick's sell.
