***The police have arrest a 43 year old man related to a hit and run incident which happened in downtown Osaka. The suspect arrested for attempted murder is Junichi Umemoto who is a auto repair shop director. Late night on Jan 22, while driving a car, he hit a man walking and tried to leave the scene. Eiji Fujikawa, 39 years old, a colleague of the man held onto the mirror of Umemoto's car. Umemoto continued to drive and dragged him approximately 100 meters before Fujikawa let go. Fujikawa-san broke his skull is now unconscious and in critical condition. The suspect is saying "I was scared of repercussions and kept on going. I didn’t mean to kill him.” On his own blog Umemoto introduces himself that he has entered over 100 official races and is an active driver.

I don't know how the law works with intent in Japan, but it seems like a watery charge. Attempted murder? It's hard to believe that he actually tried to kill the man crossing the street.

Still, as a car guy and fan of J's Racing's products, this is disgusting. It is traditional in Japanese culture to judge the character and strength of an organization by the character and strength of the organization's leaders. If their President made a conscious decision to care more about personal consequences (which, as an aside, would have been much less severe if he had stopped and called for help) than he does about the lives of two innocent people, I don't want parts designed in that same manner on my vehicle.

Who knows what really happened or if there was intent to kill. Such a shame though

Nah, I doubt any intent to kill. Sounds like he accidentally hit someone, a friend tried to get him to stop from driving away and held on to his car, and he just kept driving and the guy fell off. Now, whether he just lost his grip or if the Js president was trying to "shake" him off, I don't know...that could be the difference maker. Sadly, the guy who was hanging on and fell off died apparently.

Prayers and condolences to Eiji Fujikawa and his Family. Junichi Uemoto will probably be charged with man slaughter rather than attempted murder. He'll be lucky if he gets away with involuntary man slaughter.

Yeah, clarkster009 made a great point though -- he can be charged with attempted murder for continuing to drive on with the guy hanging onto his mirror. That would be in addition to whatever he is charged with for killing the pedestrian.

sounds like in this case it would be best to just plead guilty and try to make amends. Not that you can do that for killing someone, but i don't think there would be much gained from fighting this..

Dont you guys know how the law works in Japan... Uemoto will just pay a sum to the family in whoch they believe is suficient to cover for the pain and suffering they accrewed.. its called reparations... he'll pay and get a slap on the wrist
