so is it smoggable... some say it is.. some say it isnt.

I dont see why not, as I assume you would be swapping the smog control equipment on to the replacement

That's a tough question, and I don't have an answer for it (since I don't live in CA) but my thought is that it would all depend on what kind of ECU you used to run the engine -- on a JDM F20C you would be running the JDM ECU, which I do not think is legal in CA ... my best guess is that you would have to run a US ECU on it to pass smog, in which case you would effectively nullify any benefits of the JDM F20C.

im most likely gonna run the usdm ecu since ive heard that both the jdm motor and usdm motors make the small hp/tq

the only reason for this is due to the fact that japan gets higher octane and thus the ecu's are tuned a hair bit more aggresively. on our octane you wont be making anymore power then a UDSM F20. the compression difference (.5:1) is going to be cancelled out by the knock sensor, which when it sees the 91 octane and will pull timing and make you possibly slower than a stock US F20. its not worth the money and time, just tune your USDM motor.

im not buyin the jdm motor for more hp/tq. i need a motor and the jdm motor is the cheapest way for me to go.

he might, i get 93 here in seattle, but japan gets the equvilant of 108 octane.
