Default lower gearing for my s2k

im interested in getting a lower rear end gear for my s2k to get a little more low end, im wondering who else has done this. what gears are available from what companys. also what performance increases have you seen with this mod. finally at highway speeds how much of a difference is there. i think at 70mph i sit at about 4000rpm's and after the mod i would like to stay between 4500- 5000 if possible. any info would be great thanks.

You want a Higher gear first off, the stock gearing on the AP1's are 4.10.
J's Racing makes a 4.44 and a 4.77 and Ricks makes a 4.57.

HAHA, actually Mazda makes a 4.44 and 4.77 that J's Racing packages under their name and sells them for about $700 more. Richmond gears (a well known gear builder) builds the 4.57s from billet steel I believe, and then Ricks markets and sells them. With an AP1, unless you clutch dump from a dead stop regulary, you would love 4.77's. I plan to buy an AP2 in the near future that I will get 4.57s (I hear AP2 w/ 4.57s is like AP1 w/ 4.77s) and a reinforced comptech diff.

I would recommend 4.44s ...

Car feels like it should have come this way. Pulls better in the low gears and you don't lose a lot on the top end. Stock I was 4000rpm @75mph. Now I am 4400rpm @ 75mph.

I have heard the 2004+ feel like a 4.44 with the transmission changes in the lower gears but keep the same top end in the higher gears. That would be ideal but a transmission swap is more costly.

I was able to find used 4.44 ring and pinion from a Mazda 4x4 for $100.
