Default Ray's lug nuts

I'm using Rays Lug Nuts and over the past 5-6 months I've taken my wheels on and off maybe a total of 3 times.

I've noticed a "rotational" "clicking" from the left front tire recently and thought it was possibly a nail or screw. I jacked the car off the ground....rotated the tires and saw nothing...

Same noise....click click click...all at 2-3 mph when I turn right.

I and decided to take the whole wheel off today and I was surprised to see that 2 of my lugs were VERY loose and after taking off the wheel, one of my studs was white instead of the gold color. It's the one that was loose.

Has anyone else had problems with the light weight lugs....backing out? and is there a limited amount of times you can use them?

I haven't driven the car yet....so I'm not sure if it's solved the clicking.... but I'll update later.

If you have any other ideas on why I'm getting the click in the front when I turn to the right... I'd like to hear them.

Thanks.

Tim

most aftermarket nuts are either not meant for, or do not survive, air tool usage. Also, most people suggest you retorque your wheels after 20 to 50 miles of driving around because of the soft nature of Aluminum.

I have the Trust lug nuts, and have to clean the treads about every 3 months. I have also started toqueing to 70ft-lbs, since 80ft-lbs seems to cause more problems. No problems with the nuts coming lose.

I had posted a couple years ago that the Rays lugnuts go fast. What I mean by that is they fade over a 6-12 month period unless you have black ones and you can only take them on and off so many times before they look like shit (which is faster than the other lugnut brands I have had).. I had about 5 sets over a year period. Both blue sets faded in the Sun. The red ones I sold and the black ones I sold. I like the black ones... But a buddy of mine sheared his studs with these lugnuts too. So I have stayed away from these. This is just my observation.

I have Spoon ones, upon JsAP1's recommendation, and they seem to be working good. I do occassionally check my lugs though.

I think these and the Js open end ones are the strongest out of the lightweight ones. I have had my Spoon ones a few months now and they look almost like when I bought them and I have taken my wheels on and off about 10 times. However its not to say these cant be sheared off either... Downside with these is there is no locking nut like the Rays..

sheering off a stud has a lot to do with not using hubcentric rings and not giving the wheels a good pre-torque while off the ground to make sure they are centered...if not centered, the weight isn't equally distributed to the lugs and a lug hole can end up resting on a lug. Thats how my friend sheared a lot of his when bumping Zebra zones at Gingerman.

I have taken mine off 100s of times and they are still fine. I think that it is always good to check them after driving 50 miles or so. I have had stock lugs back off on me. It is just the nature of the beast.
