I lived in Seattle for a year. Nothing, I repeat nothing is going to make driving in that traffic up there any better except walking or bicycling

i hate the squeal of my track pads so i find myself trying this in traffic, but theres so many a-holes around here that think switching lanes every five seconds gets them through traffic faster.

I prefer to speed up to close the gaps and slam on my brakes.

Screw the traffic behind me.

Theres been a lot of studies done around the country that prove if everyone travelled like that their average speed would increase and travel time would decrease. The problem is people who like to stop and go and change lanes and speed up and slam on their brakes. Even if you don't get there faster...youre saving wear and tear.

It's probably better to let them through. Often I end up re-passing those who passed me, because they repeatedly change lanes then get themselves stuck in a bad lane.

As long as that's your attitude, you're exactly right.

Obviously traffic will exist. However I think that educating people about why traffic is caused will help address the problem. This should be taught in all driver's ed courses.

Actually I always try to drive smoothly and not touch my brakes when in stop and go traffic (rarely now since I work from home). There is always some A-hole that jumps in front of you and slams their brakes on it seems.

Drivers Ed Teaches you how to pass the test, virtually nothing about real world driving.

Heh, that's true. I just think it should be taught in a wider scale... why traffic forms and how to defeat it.

Seems like it would cost a lot less than trying to repeatedly widen highways
