Default Any bakery recommendations in DC?

Can anyone recommend a good bakery in DC near the NW area to get a birthday cake? My bf will be in DC for work next weekend and it just so happens that his birthday is on Sat. I'm going to fly down and surprise him with a birthday cake. Since cakes don't travel well on planes, I'm just going to buy one when I get to DC. Thanks in advance!

damn.. i wish i had a girl that would do that... hell i wish i had a girl! lol... but yea.. there's a place in rockville that sells french style birthday cakes.. cant tell you exactly what it's called (i know.. lame) but I am sure I can find the name of it later. The shop is also located near a Metro subway line so it might be more convenient. Again, I'll get back to you on the name.. lol

Two other possibilities:

Reeve's Restaurant and Bakery - famous for their strawberry pies.
1306 G St. NW
Washington, DC
202-628-6350

Dean and DeLuca
M Street in Georgetown

If you are planning a romantic birthday dinner, you can also call ahead and have the restaurant make you a special dessert. Enjoy!!

I think you're probably talking about Stella's. It's closed on Mondays though (I think)...

2nd on Bread and Chocolate, the one off Connecticut and near Western Ave.

Can't go wrong there.

Randolph's Bakery in Arlington, near or off Glebe Rd? Their cakes ROCK!

Thank you for all the recommendations! I will have to take into consideration my time constraints + location of his hotel in order to figure out which one I would be able to go to. I'll definitely give the several places mentioned here a call to see if I need to place an order a day in advance.

There is also Amernick's bakery on Connecticut. Her birthday cakes are a little more exotic, although she is best known for her home made caramels - which are unbelievable. I think she used to be a pastry chef at the White House.

We have tried just about everything in her store, and have never been disappointed (except for the prices, which tend to be on the high side).
