1: SLR meets my gadget cravings nicely

4: 300+mm... beat that w/ a 3x optical 10x digital zoom
5: fast enough I can keep a car in frame and take several pics of one turn, instead of hoping the car is still there when I press the button
6: over 1K pictures on 1 battery at one autox
7: if 4mp is good, 6 is better
8: because I can

I'll still use my "perfectly good 4mp camera" but only in situations where I don't want to be carrying the SLR, have plenty of batteries on hand, nothing is moving, and I can get relatively close.

So far, I've been very happy w/ the pics from my SLR, but I know I have lots of room for improvement.

 

I was asking Aussie but you make very good points and that picture is amazing by the way.

 

With an SLR there are things you can manually control (i.e. shutter speed/aperature) that you can't control with a regular old point-and-shoot. That's why.

 

If something is going down over the next few weeks, I will most likely be in the Sterling, VA area Aug 18, 19, & 20th. I'm using a Canon 20D and 10D, Canon 16-35 f/2.8L and Canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS.
