Nah, this isn't about trying to squeeze a referral fee out of it. I was offering to evaluate his case, and then I was going to point him in the direction of a couple of attorneys that I know and have met in his area. I wouldn't send someone to a friend without giving the facts a once-over myself. I can't stand when someone refers someone to me and has built up in the potential client's mind that I will take the case, and then once I talk to them I realize the case is weak or not a case at all.
