CHECK Engin light came on!! Help!!!
Hey guys,
My Check Engine light just came on and would not go away. I took the S to Koons in Manassas to have them take a look at the problem. My car is an 02 with only 2K miles. This is very alarming and I am a bit worried why this light came on at such low mileage. Has anyone experienced this on their S? What problem did the dealer find? Should I worry here since I just bought the car used from an Ohio owner on this board?

Could be one of dozens of sensors. Could be just a bad connection with one of the wires on one of them. Don't worry just yet. OR it could be you didn't screw your gas cap back on with at least 3 clicks the last time you fueled up. Did you fuel up just before the light came on? Could also be low on oil. Have you been checking your oil regularly? Like every fill up as it says in the owner's manual?
No I didn't fuel up before the light came on. I fueled up last weekend and drove the car for at least 50 miles. I also checked the oil and it was fine. I would think the oil light would come on if the oil was low. Guess I'll find out Monday. Thanks.

It could also be because of the weather, try warming the car up more often and see if it goes away. My EPS sensor got frozen stuck because my car sat for about a week in the freezing cold. That's the bad thing about our region, lots of rain and poor weather.

OK. But my car only has 2k miles and how can it burn up so much oil with so little miles? I did check the oil last week and it was fine. I know the S does burn oil during break-in but not that much.

Also the oil light will come on if the oil is very low. The engine can't maintain the same level of preasure with 2 quarts of oil than it can with full oil. Check engine light seems to suggest a sensor. Let's see what the dealer finds.

Narif, yes, the oil pressure can be maintained with just 2 qts of oil. It all depends if the oil is going through the pump at that particular time. And yes, the oil light will come on when the oil level is low but that's when there is not enough oil to go through the pump. Like I said, this is only for future reference and may not have had anything to do with your present issues.
And yes, owners who have been VTECing to redline at every opportunity have reported the oil consumption at a qt in less than 1000 miles.
You can not always apply previous experience to this engine.

I just refered to the owners manual (page 236). Here what it says:
This indictor comes on for a few seconds when you turn the ignition switch ON. If it comes on at any other time, it indicates on of the engine's emissions control system may have a problem. Even though you my feel no difference in your car's performance, it can reduce your fuel economy and cause your car to put out execcesive emissions. continued operation may cause serious damage. If you have recently refueled your car, the cause of this indicator coming on could be a loose or missing fuel fill cap. Check the cap and tighten it until it clicks serveral times.Replace the fuel fill cap if it is missing. Tightening the cap will not make the indicator turn off immediately; it takes three driving trips. If the indicator remains on the past three driving trips, or the fuel cap was not loose or missing, have the car checked by the dealer as soon as possible.
Its possible I did not tighten the fuel cap last time i refueled. I think this is the cause.
