Default Clarification Radar Detectors in VA

I'm looking to get a V1 or 8500 and wanted to get some feedback from the knowledge here. How many of you use either of the above? For those in the DC/VA areas what do you do when driving in VA? What exactly is the law? Any of you use one with a concealed display in VA? Does VA use radar detector, detectors?

Please feel free to PM me with your input if you'd rather not post on the board.

Thanks for the bandwidth.

They are illegal period. In VA and DC.

VA does use radar detector detectors. If you get stopped the officer can and will conficate it. The only way you can have one is in the trunk.

There have been many posts on this subject, do a search.

Ask 4theheckof_it, he is a former Officer and has good info on this subject.

I have had one sitting on my front dash for the past 3 years; I got pulled over a few times when the cops werent running radar and i just pulled it down (i have it velcrowed in the left corner of the car). One time I got in an accident and forgot to pull it down; the cop saw it and said something, but didnt ticket me. IMO its worth the risk, especially with a sports car. If you are in a pack of people speeding, the cop will probably pick you out. Also, radar detectors have been undetectable for the past 4 or 5 years. I have a Bel and love it. Everyonce in a while it will pick up the radar detector detector and shut off. Its never let me down.

all radar detectors are illegal in va..... since many people come in from md for work and such... they say you should take it town before crossing the border and either put it in the trunk or put it in your glove box...

Ah.. let's see.. where do I begin.

1. Radar detectors are illegal. Period. If it's hardwired to the car, the officer can actually have the vehicle impounded til the court date. If it's in the glove box, it can still be confiscated. As long as the radar detector has ample access to any power supply, then it is deemed worthy to be confiscated and a summons can be issued for use.

2. There are radar detector detectors that the police do use. It is a mobile and moving device that detects if a radar detector is in use. Probable cause to stop a vehicle.

3."Also, radar detectors have been undetectable for the past 4 or 5 years." Wrong.

4."There are different types...passive and active.....I think passive might be legal and the active not..." Nope. All radar detectors are illegal.

5."They are illegal period. In VA and DC.
