Gas Mileage Help
Ok,
I have been meaning to do this for awhile and I am going to finally say it. I have a 2002 AP1 that just hit 50,000 miles. I do the oil changes frequently (every 2000 miles) and have cared for this care very well. I am the original owner, broke the engine in properly and do not drive crazy at startup or accelerate crazy (on occasion) but for basic daily driving, no. I have modified the car with a Toda Header, a custom intake (basically it is an AEM), and an Invidia Dual (Ti tips) exhaust. I use 93 octane to fill the car up, and the question that I pose, is why is it that EVERY time that I fill up, the first 5-6 bars of my gas (approx over 1/4 tank) goes like HOT cakes. Seriously within like 40 miles it is gone. But from that point on - the gas goes fine, approx ~21 miles to the gallon. Is there something wrong here? Just wondering. I am going to install a VAFC and get the car tuned and hopefully I am running lean or rich? Or my Air/Fuel ratio is off? Could this be the problem? Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Andrew, it's normal. The fuel gauge in the S2000 sucks. You just need to know approximately how far you can go on a tank and forget about it. I like when I get down to one bar and a couple of seconds later i have 3 bars. Must be in-flight refueling.
Re-read your post. Are you saying you get 21mpg after a quarter tank is gone or that you average 21mpg total? Is this a recent occurrence?

I think at zero bars you still have 1.5 gallons. I can't be sure, but so don't take it as gospel. I can tell you that I've gone beyond zero bars on more than one occasion- even ran out of gas once. I don't advise doing this though.

A sermon from Dave: Generally keeping on-topic with this thread...keep in mind folks that our S2000's fuel pump has been engineered to remain 'cool' by being bathed in the fuel within the fuel tank that the fuel pump resides. Drive on an ultra-low tank...and I can tell you from experience...you will be replacing your fuel pump.[/endsermon]

with most vehicles this is the case...
-i also hate it when i park on an incline with a half tank of gas and start the car then
only a quater tank of gas...then like skip and dan says..the great inflight fuel-up!
have a great day!
i haven't checked my mileage lately but i used to get 240 miles from pump to pump with 1 bar left on the gauge. hwy driving bumps up the mileage to 330 miles.
no bars should be good for 50 miles but i'll heed pastor w1ngman's advice.
