Narif,
I hope you don't mind me posting this question in this thread, but for someone who has recently broken into the IT field (2 years experience), do you have any recommendations for me to get into security as a specialization? Right now I work for a small company where my boss, one coworker and myself comprise the entire IT staff. We all collaborate on all of our efforts so I've learned a good amount about everything that makes up this field. But, I see myself stuck in this 'small potatoes' company unless I can specialize my skills.

I would advise you to look into self studying or taking some classes on Security.

I wish I could get a job in Security myself, even with knowledge in Disaster Recovery/Data Assurance, Hardening, Net Defense/Countermeasures (SCNP), and CSSP (Cisco Firewalls, ACL's, etc.).. it's still hard to even get my foot in the door as most companies are looking for people with so-and-so years of experience.

I would advise into finding a Cisco Network Academy near you, if possible. I've been taking classes at one here in Arizona and have learned a great deal that helped me acquire certifications.

Yea, I've been studying my ass off for my CCNA which I'm testing for next month.. and I have no intention at stopping there. Like you say though everyone wants experience, no one wants to hire a cheap protege! OPM is conducting my Secret investigation right now so that will help. But, I'm getting anxious. I get to play in the routers and firewalls here once in a while but with everything running like a top on the backend I spend most of the time at the users' desks!

CCNA is a good base to build off of. The first things I did were my CCNA, Security+, and Network+.

I'm currently trying to get the NOC Analyst job that is open here at GoDaddy (where I currently work). Hopefully I'll get it so it may give some rather beneficial experience where I could move up to a Security or higher position.

Good luck to you, sir!
