Major I-66 Overnight Detour to Begin Aug. 21 or 29
I-66 in Prince William County will close for 60 Days
30 days in the eastbound and 30 days westbound
Two-mile backups at detour expected adding 30 minutes to commute
What: VDOT will shut down I-66 eastbound lanes overnight, when the traffic volume is the lowest, at Route 234 Business (Exit 43) up to 30 evenings starting, Aug. 21 or 29. Once crews finish paving the new eastbound lanes work will immediately shift to the westbound lanes at Route 234 Bypass (Exit 47) closing I-66 overnight, toward I-81 for an additional 30 evenings.
When: Eastbound: Monday through Saturday, 7 p.m. to 4 a.m.
Aug. 21/Aug. 29-Sept. 30
Westbound: Monday through Saturday, 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Sept.30-Oct. 31
Why: I-66 is being widened for 3.9 miles from two lanes in each direction to four lanes in each direction between Route 234 Business and the Route 234 Bypass in Prince William County. Work began in August 2004 and is scheduled for completion in Oct. 2006. Original plans called for closing one of two lanes on I-66 at night for approximately three months. However, the same work can be completed in two months if traffic is detoured off the interstate overnight. This will enable construction crews to place two paving machines side by side on the interstate and ensure a much smoother riding surface. The detour will also be safer for highway workers and for motorists.
