All it takes is ONE over-rev situation to split all 8 intake retainers. I've rebuilt 3 heads already for a missed shift. One of them was in for a routine VA, and had no issues or noise whatsoever. A rev-limiter has absolutely no effect in the case of a missed-shift over-rev.
The good news here is that the tires locked up. Which means the inertia of the car didn't spin the engine as fast as it would have if you didn't break traction.
I would, beyond a shadow of a doubt, check the retainers. All you will need to pull is the valve cover, no other disassembly is required. Using a penlight and a dental mirror, here's what you will be looking for:
These are the tops of the valves, and retainers. You will not see the crack underneath the retainer. But if it's cracked, it will be quite obvious
Notice how on the broken retainer, the keepers and valve are sunk down.
Good retainer on the left.............................................. ........Broken retainer on the right
If left unattended, the valve and keepers will eventually break through the retainer. The valve will drop into the cylinder, causing major engine damage. At the point the original poster is at now, if you find they are broken, they can be swapped in a few hrs and you'll be good as new.

The S2000 motor is tough up to about 8,000 - 8,500 RPM's. It is tough at 9,000 too, but can get stressed if you're bouncing off the rev limiter for some time. There are all kinds of problems that can stem from this, but I think xviper and billman have covered the major parts pretty well
Now Tuner, we all appreciate it when someone chimes in to help - just don't get upset if you're proven wrong. It happened to me earlier today in S2000 Talk.
J you need to spend more time in UTH. Xviper and Billman rock with the amount of info they have made available to all of us. I know one person from the area that drove all the way to Long Island to have Bullman work on his car. I wish he was down this way.
