Mountain Drive Route needed
Hello fellow owners,
been a long time since I posted. This new job is killin me and my wife and I just sold our house (after 60 days on market) so that has been a hassle. (Good note, I'm moving into a 3 car garage place..woo hoooo for the S2000).
Anyway...I need to know if any of you can tell me the route that this group took back in March 2004 for what I believe was called the March Madness ride? I believe we had a picnic at a field with BBQ sandwiches, then we split into 'fast', 'medium' and regular speed groups and took off for the ride. We all waited at the top of the mountain for a picturesque view of the valley below.
I think it was near UVA?
Anyone know what Im talking about and how to get down to the 'start' of that drive?
thanks!

I believe you are talking about Afton to Skyline Drive (near Waynesboro, but past Charlotsville). I just took that particular drive last weekend
Watch out for the Park Rangers.
Hey - that was my drive. I can tell you what you need...but don't have the mileage info, so you'll have to look out for familiar sights. By the way, you can follow signs to Wintergreen to get to the starting point, which is basically Nellysford, VA at the base of the mountain on Rt. 151.
From the park, you continue south on Rt. 151 for I guess 10 miles
You will then turn right on Rt. 666 at a somewhat unusual looking church
At the end of Rt. 666 after a couple of miles, turn right on Rt. 56
Follow Rt. 56 until you get to the Blue Ridge Parkway
You can turn right to get onto the BRP or you can stay on Rt. 56 and go down the other side of the mountain. If you stay on Rt. 56, there are more twisties for another mile or so, then you'll want to turn around and come back to the top to get on the BRP.
Go north on the BRP, and you're probably about 30-40 miles south of Afton, which was the end point of that drive. Afton is right at I-64, so you have easy access to high-speed roads...or you can get on Skyline Drive (actually a continuation of BRP), but you will have to pay a national park access fee. I believe it is $10 for a day, but an annual pass runs $20.
Just a tip - if you miss the turn for Rt. 666, continue on 151 until you see signs for Rt. 56, and be sure to take that west to Montebello and/or Steeles Tavern
Good luck
Rodney

Rodney - glad to see you're still alive. When do you want to organize the next drive? How about a Fall drive?

WOW...Rodney lives!!!!!
Vintage Spring Fling 07 is going to be in SW VA, so I plan to incorporate those roads into our drive. Very fun down there!!
