What's the problem with my post? Everything I said is completely accurate. This is a computer help thread and seeing someone say XP is the worst OS ever is an immediate red flag for mis-information. Anyone who works in IT or with computers in general should have commented on that. Just trying to help out.

 

I would disagree. Vista was much worse. Microsoft extended their support of XP SP3 because Vista was the new Me. Maybe not that bad.

 

Oh yeah. Kapersky is suppose to be pretty good, at least that what the Gardner report says. But it's not a US-based company.

 

Kaspersky is excellent. I run it on my end user's laptops here at work and haven't had any problems with it.

 

 

I think at this point, the general consensus from IT folks would be that it's time to upgrade from XP. Whether or not XP is good is irrelevant, the fact is that 7 is better. We're not talking turbo kit prices to upgrade either... it's maybe 100$ for a single install OEM, but probably even cheaper than that. The feature list is much more impressive, it supports 64 bit installations (I really enjoyed going to 8 GB+ of RAM when I upgraded), and the end user experience is just better. I'm a MCP, but what do I know...

I can't comment on the OP's request for antivirus software - I tend to view all of it as bloatware and don't bother. But I also don't have any issue formatting and starting from scratch should I happen to hose my box, which I understand is not the norm. Just keep your media on a separate drive from the OS, that way you really won't lose anything if and when you get into trouble and need a format.

 

Because viruses don't seek out data to infect anywhere besides the OS drive?

 

External HDD, or Flash. Implying, not always connected. Figured that would have been obvious, but apparently that doesn't apply to you.
