Reckless driving in VA
Thanks you guys!
I was brave enough to let my girl know about this trip and she said she has a friend who's lawyer
She's calling her friend to find out good lawyer around that area.
This was Wythe County. I believe we JUST entered Southern Virginia when this happened. I was hoping we were in NC.
well I'll keep you guys updated. Court date is June 5th as of now

Sucks to hear. Tired or not guy with radar stays up front. You guys should have stopped w/ us. If you hire a lawyer there's a good chance you won't have to be present. My last RD ticket it was flat fee 1100 for lawyer. Your MD license is safe though. I couldn't believe my ears when they said you got pulled over.
I was doing about 75, and Mark didn't punch it. I think the cop was an ass.
Im really sorry Mark. I will throw down for this ticket.
If he was nice he would have given you a failure to obay highway sign or improper driving. You can get it dropped to impropper driving if your record is clear. I had one a long time ago and paid a laywer and got mine dropped to improper driving. It shouldn't effect your points thoughs since you are in MD. Out of state usually doens't effect points. You just pay it. Sorry man. he probably gave you the reckless because you were MD and he could.
Ya I was stupid for saying yes to him moving up. But I swear on my mother that the cop did not use his radar gun. It was silent, not even a pipe on my radar detector.

I wouldn't use this argument in court, seeing as how radar detectors are illegal in VA.
In my experience with traffic laws because I'm younger and done some dumb things and some bad luck things. In the tri-state area getting a ticket will be reported to your state but points will be deducted according to that state offense. For example I got a speeding ticket in MD and I have a VA driver's license. In VA a speeding ticket is 4 points, in MD it is 2 points so I got deducted 2 points. My advice to you, because my GF did the same thing, would be to get your car calibrated. If the dyno says your off by a certain amount of mph that makes you under 80mph, judge will drop it to a speeding. Now I'm not saying this is also a good idea or moral, but I've heard of people using the yellow box to bump down the MPH reading just enough to bump down the ticket if your OEM reading isn't good enough. Lawyer no matter what is a good idea, but most lawyers will tell you to take a reckless driving class, and get your car calibrated before going to court.
I hope this helps and good luck

I did take reckless driving/driving improvement class years ago. About 7-8 years ago. Do I need to take it again?
I also did hear about getting my car calibrated. Hmmm....
Wow, I had an 87/65 awhile back (first ticket) and the fine was like $500 and I didn't have a lawyer.
In terms of points, those are available here:
http://www.dmv.state.va.us/webdoc/ci...s/points_6.asp
You could potentially take a Driving Improvement Course to help lower the penalty - which may or may not work. Some counties recognize it and some don't. Here are some of those courses:
http://www.dmv.state.va.us/webdoc/ci...rs/clinics.asp
I do know they have changed the laws since I got my ticket, but $2500 + lawyer seems quite excessive. Reckless Driving would make you ineligible to prepay the fine and skip court, so count on showing up.
From personal experience, provided you have a clean record. Request a written copy of your driving record from DMV and take the driving clinic before going to court and bring the certificate.

They have radar detector detectors here in this shitty speed trap called VA... trust me I've spent several dollars on radar tickets and finally said screw it and stopped using one. I think the cop was a dick to charge you with RD even though anything over 80 is...gotta love the VA laws... dumb laws created by dumb people!
