Well I'm probably not going to be allowed anywhere near my apartment for another 1-2 days, probably not going to have power back there for 5-6 days at least, my reef tank is dying, and i spent all last night pumping sewage out my workplace. Other than that I'm OK I guess ....
Definitely could've been worse I guess. I hope everyone else in the area is OK!
Check! Last night was horrible as it took me numerous attempts to find my way AROUND the floods in my MINI but I made it to high ground in Mechanicsville where I stuck it out until after the majority of the rain moved through the area. Our facility near the airport began to flood and swallowed a co-workers new Altima in the process, but fortunately I parked in a no-threat zone. The S2K was tucked away safely in the garage. The Short Pump/Glen Allen area where I live did not receive nearly the amount of rain and wind as other areas.
Around noon today I saw w1ngman getting of I-64 onto Broad St and also another yellow S2K (owner?) so I know he's in good shape.
i was fine here as well, but guess i wont be going clubbing for a while on another note, my +1 was stuck on the bridge on powhite for a while after i told her NOT to take that way, and to go cary to huguenot. cars in front of her started floating away right before the forest hill exit, so she turned around and went the wrong way on powhite (as others were doing) only to reach cars floating on the other side of the bridge, so she just sat safely on the bridge untill cops opend some service road that has been closed down to let the trapped people out. and then she of course had an easy trip home by going the way i told her to go to begin with
6pm I left work (westend) and headed west on Broad. Stayed in center lane at 22mph with the emergency flashers on. Anyone that's seen my car knows she's loooooooooow. Add to that an Injen CAI that would luv to ingest water under the passenger's headlamp...and let me tell you, I drove home on pins and needles
Watched every car around me...watched the path their tires cut through the water to gauge how the body of their car was positioned in relation to water on road. Just drove safely and slowly and didn't rev hard -- tried not to go over 1500rpms. Also I'd punch the brakes hard every now and again (in case any water possibly pooled into the lower portion of the CAI tube). Figured the inertia of braking hard would flush out any water that might have settled.
As I approached the traffic light at Broad and Gaskins (anyone that knows this area...you can visualize that all four points towards the intersection move from a high/hill down to the lowest point...the intersection itself). Still in the center lane I watched as cars approached and went through the intersection. Those in the right lane heading west on Broad were pounding through a pond !!! Center lane vehicles looked to be progressing safely. So I remained in center lane and as light changed I became the 1st car in line at the light in that lane. Watched to my right where Gaskins crossed Broad and was amazed to see literal whitecaps of rushing water looking like rapids. As Gaskins traffic proceeded across Broad northbound they'd hit that water looking like they were in a Jeep commercial! Front ends of every car disappeared under an overspray of water. Lord I was glad I wasn't over there! Rolled slowly off the light and up the hill... No problems but I decided too that I didn't want to stay on 250 all the way out to Oilville...so I planned to pick up 64W at CarMax. Ya know how big a parking lot CarMax has? All that blacktop and nothing to hold water back . As I approached the "S-exit" off of 250 onto 64W water was passing across the exit at about 6" deep. And fast rushing at that! OMG...what to do? I took the lowest point I could appreciate, approached quickly and then dumped the accelerator to just an idle and coasted through the water. Gently applied only enough throttle to equate to moving the car once I went through the water and gingerly accumulated speed. Took the rest of the drive 64W at about 45mph with turnsignals. Surprisingly, although there wasn't any standing water on 64...everyone else was being civil as well and just taking their time to safely get home. That was true of my travails down Broad street as well. No real punks...no hot-heads. Everyone was quite civil.
Oops, just saw this. Have been too busy at work to check the board much this week.
Came through ok, had the same "interesting" experiences getting home as a lot of you. Getting back to work all week has been fun as well due to road closures, the Powhite disaster, etc.
Inventory of weird Richmond crap in the past twelve months:
- Hurricane
- Earthquate
- Torrential floods
i came out fine. nothing out here in the west end.
MR294, if you want, i can house your reef for you. I have a tank that is setup with nothing but liverock for a while. so.. you are more than welcome to bring some guests over... You might want to tell me what condition you have your water set to so i can make the transition easier for the fishies.
