SCAM!
Found this posted on another board, apparently happened to a friend of mine. Just keep a heads up guys.
NOT...
But some group of idiots sent me a bill that said that I owed $25,167 on my cell phone bill.
Someone tell me, this has to break some laws, somewhere; and there has to be an agency that'll pursue it...
So I call the number listed in the "bill": 800 639-6111
You get some very official sounding recordings that anyone would believe was actually sprint. Then you enter the cell number you're calling about. Nothing happens, you wait and wait in a queue. But I figured out that by calling that number in the bill that they captured by ANI information for my home phone, and when I entered my cell phone number, they capture that too. The bill is very authentic looking, but after calling the number on the bill, it dawned on me that there was no billing dates, and my phone number wasn't listed on the bill; but they did have my account number correct.
So I hang up, pull up the Sprint website and get their customer service number. The guy I spoke to immediately called foul on the bill. Whoever these guys were, they were able to get into my account however, and change the security info too. So he couldn't give me account specifics, but he could say that my bill isn't even 1% of the amount in the "bill". So I have to go to a Spring store.
Then, no sooner did I get off the phone with Sprint that I got a call from 402-408-3653 on my home phone, which was the phone that I used to call the number that was in the bill. The call disconnected immediately. Right after that, my cell phone rang from the same number. I answered, it was a recording telling me to call 866-854-5359.
So I looked up both numbers, and they come back to a group that purports to be a "collection agency". But all one needs do is look and see that these guys are way out of line for a collection agency, as demonstrated by the sheer number of complaints about them, and threats that they make.
In my case, they've seemingly crossed a line by hijacking my cell account, and sending me a fraudulent bill.
I've filed a complaint with the FTC, but I have no faith that'll result in anything. And after having spent 7 years with BellSouth, I know that they just send someone with a complaint to the FTC.
